Alresford Golf Club

Club History

Alresford Golf Club, located on 105 acres of chalky downland to the south of Alresford, has a rich history dating back to 1890. The original 9-hole Course was established on common land by a group of local golf enthusiasts who wanted to bring the pastime to the town. Club assets at the turn of the century were listed as: A mower with a box; a roller; a hole cutter; 7 rings; 8 iron numbers; 4 leather horse boots and £16.12s.2d.  All aided by the local sheep which we still use today.

By 1907, the Club had expanded to an 18-hole course, largely due to the increasing popularity of the sport and the dedication of its members, a theme which has continued to the present day.

The Course design has evolved over the years incorporating modern standards, whilst maintaining and being mindful of the natural beauty of the downland landscape on which it is situated.  Notably, the Course underwent significant redesigns in the 1920s and 30s, including the introduction of bunkers, and again in the post-war period when it had been reduced back to 9 holes to help with the war effort.

In 1993 the Course was extended to the current layout when the A31 bypass was constructed, it was officially opened for play by John Jacobs (Golf Professional and Ryder Cup player). Since then re-shaping of some holes and repositioning of tees and bunkers as advised by the renowned course architects Hawtree & Co has meant the Course continues to present a challenge for all levels of golfer both amateur and professional.

On the social side, up until 1953 the local pub, the Cricketers Arms, was used as a Clubhouse, however, to help improve finances an old railway carriage was purchased and placed on the Course and with the help of many volunteers, it was transformed into a ‘cosy’ Clubhouse.

This temporary solution lasted until 1970 when a new and modern Clubhouse was opened on the present site.  A fire in 2001 led to a partial rebuild and extended changing rooms, kitchen  and Pro-Shop. However, with the membership growing and expectations increasing, the Clubhouse underwent a further comprehensive refurbishment in 2021.

Throughout its history, as well as playing in and hosting many prestigious golf events, contributing to its reputation across the County, the Club has also been responsible for introducing several popular events such as The Alresford Cup , a regional  Inter-County Junior Girls competition and The Alresford Scratch Competition, a county recognised Ladies League.

Alresford is also the only Club in the County to have an official match against the Men’s County Team. Originally instigated in 1970 by David Harrison OBE,  a long time member, former President of the EGU and Past Captain of the R&A. The fixture remains on the County Calendar and has featured some of Hampshire’s best golfers throughout the years including Justin Rose, Steve Richardson, Richard Bland, Scott Gregory, Harry Ellis and San Hutsby.

The Club has maintained a strong community presence, supporting local charities and fostering a welcoming environment for golfers of all ages and abilities.  Today, Alresford Golf Club continues to thrive, blending the rich heritage and tradition, community spirit and the timeless allure of the game of golf on the beautiful downland slopes of the Hampshire Countryside.

The success of the Club is testament to the careful stewardship by the all the Club’s members, volunteers, trustees, committees and staff.
