How do we manage the risks associated with burning wood on the course for both staff and members?
The Course Manager has completed a risk assessment. Risks are managed and governed by exposure times. The time staff spend managing the fire is set by the Course Manager. Generally fires will only be lit during cold spells of weather when the course is quiet.
Why don’t we recycle any trees we fell or branches etc we lop off?
Where we can we leave the wood to decay naturally, but where we can’t we try to stockpile wood and this is available to members should they wish to take it. Contact the Course manager if you are interested.
Why do greenkeepers burn the waste from woodland management on the course?
Waste wood is burnt in 2 areas; close to the sixth tee and on the far side of the driving range. Where we can we leave the wood and leaves in situ to decay naturally. Where we can’t do this we either chip, remove and stockpile or burn depending on conditions.
What is the process for someone to report a course maintenance issue they encounter during play? e.g a bunker is very compacted and needs deep raking.
The correct process for reporting a course maintenance issue is to send an email giving full details of the issue to greens@alresfordgolf.co.uk. Please do not report the issue directly to members of greens staff, as they will not be able to rectify the issue immediately and it will delay their work.
During greens maintenance why don’t we tine half a green one week and the other half the following week so the hole can always be placed on a smooth surface?
We perform tining on whole greens as our greens are relatively small. If we were to only tine half a green at a time it would roughly double the time required to perform the maintenance, would increase the cost of this maintenance work and would also mean that the recovery time of the whole green…
Why don’t we provide sand bags on the first and 10th tees for people to carry to repair their divots?
There are a number of reasons why we do not do this, which largely comes down to cost versus benefit. There would be the initial outlay required for the bags and hanging stations. There would then be a maintenance overhead on the green keepers to ensure that bags are filled. If a seed mix were…
Is it true that the course maintenance programme is geared towards the Club Championship and Pro-Am?
This is a common misconception and is not true. In fact, the dates of the Club Championships and Pro-Am have largely been chosen to coincide with the time when the course is most likely to be at its peak condition. However, it is true that in the few days prior to these events the work…
Why do the greenkeepers only work on a..(Insert your favourite weekday here)..?
It is a popular misconception that the green keepers only work on certain days of the week. The full green keeping staff work every weekday, with one green keeper working at weekends to cut the greens and tees and perform other urgent maintenance as time allows. We also try to employ casual workers to rake bunkers…
