What is being done to prevent Rook damage to the course?
In order to discourage Rooks from digging up fairways and damaging greens various pieces of bird scaring equipment are being used, along with rope bangers and a gas gun to keep the birds off the ground. Shooting is also taking place on the course and its boundaries. The Rooks are causing the damage as they…
What is done to control grubs and insect larvae on the course?
There is only one active ingredient available on the market to treat leather jackets (crane fly larvae) and chafer grubs, this is called Chlorantraniliprole, product name Acelepryn, and we are using this product on greens, tees, aprons and 1 hectare of fairways yearly to keep within the current usage guidelines. Also see the FAQ titled…
What length of grass do we have in our swales?
The length of grass in the swales will vary depending on the time of year but will generally be at apron height, between 10mm and 12mm.
Do we cut our rough to a standard length over the whole course?
Yes, we do. The first cut of rough is set to 25mm and the second cut is set to 75mm. As our course is set on uneven chalk downland, we have chosen these as the optimal lengths to provide a fair challenge for golfers, whilst also preventing the grass cutting machinery ‘scalping’ the course in…
Why is the grass on the bank underneath the Yew tree on the left side of the 18th fairway longer than other rough areas?

Are the stroke indexes for the holes set by the Greens Committee?
The setting of stroke indexes for the holes is the responsibility of the Competition and Handicap Committee. The stroke indexes are used for two purposes. The first is for match play, where paramount importance is given to achieving an even spread of strokes to be received at all handicap differences over the 18 holes. CONGU…
What is the Barn on the 12th used for?
The barn adjacent to the 12th green contains two large water tanks and the course irrigation system. The water is pumped from here around the whole course. We utilise both mains water supply and a bore hole supply. The bore hole is located just outside the barn in the direction of the 13th green. The…
