Management Corner

Clubhouse Development

By the time you read this we should have received our Architect’s detailed drawings, comprising plans, elevations, design options, proposed layouts and visualisations.

Assuming this to be the case the timing now looks this:

End August – meeting of the Management Committee Sub-Group leading on the project to review and approve drawings and visualisations

September – up to three weeks membership consultation, including if required one-to-one and small group meetings

September 23 – Management Committee sign-off of the consultation process, but to extend the deadline beyond this if proving necessary

End September – finalisation of all plans and costings

October – finalisation of funding proposals

End October – EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting) for membership final approval of project plans, costings and funding proposals

We will be in touch with you again once we have the appropriate visualisations to hand, and the methodology for consulting all members.

Thanks once again for your patience and for your continuing support for this exciting project.

From the Club Captain

I start this edition with the sad news that Derrik Moorhouse, a member since 1974 and former Club Captain passed away on the 17th August.

Throughout his playing days he was fiercely competitive, his greatest triumphs being in the matchplay format, winning the Ross Trophy (over 50’s matchplay), Rotherham (mixed foursomes), Cooper Foursomes  and he was a member of the Marston’s Trophy winning team in 1992. He was also an active member and supporter of the Hampshire Alliance (http://www.pga.info/regions/england-(south)/counties/hampshire/hants-alliance.aspx) and Derrik latterly played his golf with his ‘Skool’ friends. After his playing days were over he retained a Social Membership and he visited the Club once or twice a week courtesy of a lift from his good friend Robin Good.

Derrik’s funeral will be held at Basingstoke Crematorium on Friday 6th September at 11:00 and afterwards at the Club. All friends are very welcome.

August has been a good month from a golf perspective, with many of our players producing a lot of first-rate scores. Some are worthy of an individual mention, the first is Ron Markwick who started the month with a playing handicap of 20. After winning the 100 Club Salver with a impressive 43 points, Ron followed this up by winning his division in the August Midweek Medal and a 2nd place in the Midweek Stableford, he finished the month with a 3 shot reduction and a 17 handicap – well played Ron!

The Centenary Trophy, hosted this year by Army Golf Club was played in extremely windy conditions but this didn’t stop our Club Champion, Will Packenham-Walsh, from playing extremely well and finishing head and shoulders above everyone else by winning the best individual score with 36 points in this team competition.  The conditions were so tough that the CSS rendered the competition reductions only and Will’s handicap was reduced by 0.3. The Alresford team finished as runners-up; better luck next year when Hayling host the competition. Will had previously won his division in the August Midweek Medal and he finished the month off by taking 3rd place overall in the Bill Young Trophy, which was won by Kevin Stride – well played Kevin! Will started August playing off of a 5 handicap and finished on 3, this is a notable achievement for a Category One player where the reduction is only 0.1 per shot – well played Will!

The juniors have also got into the act with Rosie Rooney and Harriet Riches finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the Ladies Munro Spencer Bowl. It is great to see our Junior Section flourishing.

The Mens Invitation on the 18th August was supported by 26 pairs who enjoyed some good weather, a golf course in fantastic condition and fine food. The overall winners were Brian Wright and David Williams from Ogbourne Downs Golf Club who have been supporting this event for a number of years; congratulations to them, and to all of the participants, in making it a great day.

These invitations are a fantastic opportunity for us to demonstrate what our Club has to offer, my thanks to George Clelland in organising the day.

This month’s Found Ball I think might belong to AL (or Alan?) and as soon as I found it a clip from the BBC series A Walk on the Wild Side popped into my mind and became an Earworm, some of you might remember it  – “Alan, Alan, Alan, Alan, Alan, Al, Alan, Alan” – check out the clip on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=fZIX7cPmFYc&list=RDfZIX7cPmFYc&start_radio=1&t=2 – so Al, please pop into the Secretary’s office and collect your Earworm!

A final reminder for this year’s Captains Day on Sunday 15th September. The sign up sheets are in the foyer and there are still some slots available for a complete team of 4 in both AM and PM, and there are also a few spaces for individual players to add their names to incomplete teams. The course will be closed all day as there will be 2 shotgun starts, so add your names to the sheet if you want to play golf at Alresford that day!

We are One Club and all can play (including HPLS) and to encourage more members to participate the Men will play from the Yellow Tees and the Ladies from the Red Tees and the competition is designated as a non-qualifier.

There will be plenty of prizes to play for and it is free to enter with a free halfway house, some of the treats on offer include Pimms, beer, sausage rolls and Danish pastries and not to mention a wee nip of my Captain’s Reserve Single Malt Whisky – what’s not to like?

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the day.

Graham Marshallsay

Ladies Section

I have played a lot of golf this month – mostly in lovely weather but occasionally in the rain – most memorably at Romsey on the 14th but this was straddled by two glorious days when our Senior Ladies took part in their Championship which consists of two medal rounds.  I didn’t qualify to play this year but oh dear next year I will!  Congratulations to Sarah Staines for winning the Championship by 3 shots from Jan Harring (both of whom also got very wet on the middle day at Romsey).

I failed last month to welcome back Helen Marchant who after a couple of years away has re-joined as a full member – its lovely to have you back Helen.

Debbie Wills has had a great run on the golf course and has now become a silver lady having been cut two whole shots after her great win in the summer salver.  Jan Harring has also joined the silver division with a series of good scores – well done Debbie and Jan for such good results and your deserved handicap changes.

We have a great calendar of friendly matches each year but on two occasions so far clubs have sadly failed to field teams to come to Alresford.  Many clubs are moving to triangular matches – three way ties which reduce the burden on the home club and are a great format as it forces you to play with ladies from other clubs as a horizontal team of three as well as a vertical team of 7 or 8 which makes for a very friendly game.  We currently play two ties in this format, Alresford/Army/Stoneham and Alresford/Meon/Liphook and we may well see more of these in the future.

The Ladies Invitation is also reducing in popularity each year – something we will be looking at in Committee – but a change in format may be necessary if we want to keep this in the calendar going forward.  If anyone would like to make a suggestion as to how we could renew this competition please let me have your ideas.

Many of you will have seen my email about the Macmillan Stableford on the 31st August/3rd September.  I look forward to presenting one of you with a rose once the results are in.

We are encouraging our Junior Girls to take part in Ladies Competitions when they are able but they do need an adult to mark their cards for them.  Aside from Saturdays – the next occasion now will be at half term when we will welcome them to join us in the Tuesday Stableford – if you are interested in playing with them then do please let me know.

On 29th September, the Alresford Cup takes place (at Alresford) which is a Junior Girls Trophy  competed for by girls from Hampshire, Berkshire, Dorset, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey, Sussex and Wiltshire.  This is an inspirational day for us all and we need your help in the form of shepherdesses to escort the groups around the course on the day.  There is a sheet on the noticeboard to sign up for this extremely rewarding task so please do consider giving your time to do this.

Finally the sign-up sheet for the Autumn Meeting is also on the board in the changing room so please do put your names down to play.

Happy Golfing!

Sue

Match Committee Report

Men’s Invitation – Sunday 18th August

26 members and guests played in the Men’s Invitation. There was some excellent scoring in the afternoon 4BBB with 16 pairs scoring more than 36 points. The clear winners with a total for the day of 72 points were Brian Wright and his guest David Williams from Ogbourne Down; second were Les Thorne and Don Donaldson from High Post with 68 points and in third place was Andy Morffew and Jeff Green from South Winchester with 67 points. The leading pair with a guest with a non-CONGU handicap was Neil Gandy and Andy Gwynne with 65 points. My thanks to David Maskery for his assistance with the organisation, Chris and Kelly for the catering and to David Robertson for the scoring.

Early Starters

There have been reports from the Greenstaff of members playing on the course well before they have had time to complete the preparation of the course. There’s no complaint of these members interfering with the work of the Greenstaff. However, on competition days it’s possible that the Greenstaff may not have finished moving tee markers and pin positions. Consequently, we would ask that on competition days that early starters do not commence play until after 06:30 during the summer. Obviously, as the days become shorter this time will gradually become later. We will look to put a Competition Start Time on the Early Starters Sign-up Sheet.

It is worth noting that some clubs prohibit any play on the course before 7:00am or in some cases 8:00am.

Entry Criteria for Competitions

A follow-up and reminder from previous editions of Fore Info. We’re changing one of the basic entry criteria for competitions. Instead of having a handicap with competition status you will have to have submitted scores in at least 6 qualifying competitions in the 12 months prior to the closing date of entry for the competition. Remember, that for men, there are no qualifying competitions between mid-November and the beginning of March, so to be eligible for competitions in March 2020 you need to ensure you submit enough qualifying scores this year.

Some other reminders: –

  • To enter the 2019/2020 Winter Leagues, by 20th October 2019 you will need to have played in at least 6 qualifying competitions since November 2018.
  • To enter the summer knock-outs in 2020, by 1st March 2020 you will need to have played in at least 6 qualifying competitions since 1st March 2019.
  • If you have not submitted enough qualifying scores, then you may still play in singles, stroke-play competitions for handicapping purposes only. You will not be eligible for prizes.

Supplementary Scores

The procedure for submitting a Supplementary Score is posted in the Changing Rooms. A couple of important reminders …

  • You must register for a Supplementary Score using the PSI terminal before you start your round.
  • Your score card should be dated, signed by your marker, and the set of tees used must be indicated.
  • Your score card should be placed in the green box underneath the PSI terminal.

George Clelland

A Look at the Rules

Question.

A player tees off into long rough approximately 200 yards from the tee.

He decides to play a provisional ball which finishes in the short rough 150 yards from the tee. He then plays the provisional ball to the green.

He then finds his original ball and plays it to the green and holes the putt.

When picking up his provisional ball, he discovers that it was not his provisional ball.

What did the player score for the hole?

Vets Section

Just a quiet August for Vets friendly matches with only 5 played and then a mere six matches to go until the season’s end.

We are still up on wins (16 out of 31 played and 7 halved matches to date).

We had an excellent day for our Vets Invitation with 32 Alresford Vets hosting fellow seniors from 26 other clubs. Good weather, a delightful post match lunch, some great golf results and two charming ladies who had organised a hugely appreciated halfway house: thanks to Kathryn and her sister-in-law Janet! A total of £154.66 was collected for the captains’ charity. Winners on the day were:

1st.   Ray Coleshill & Chad Cooper (Chichester). – pictured receiving the trophy
2nd.  Peter Armitage & Nick Hilton (Lilleshall).
3rd.   Gareth Rees & Trevor Rees (Tytherington).

Best 1st 9  (1st Tee starters)   Ed Tinley & Reg Webster (Coxmoor)
Best 1st     (10th Tee starters)  Pete Dowse & Bob Wolf (Surbiton)

Nearest the Pin on 6th …………..  Geoff Hooker (Basingstoke)
Nearest the Pin on 13th …………  Norman Sheen
Nearest the Pin in 2 on 18th ….   Ian Avory (Tyrells Wood)

The annual Flag Competition took place on a very wet and challenging Wednesday morning with a small but hardy group of stalwart Vets. Players were allowed just 60 shots plus handicap with the winner Gareth Rees (pictured with the trophy presented by Wynne Tufnell) making the 17th fairway.

The shot of the month award goes to Eddie “The Eagle” Martin who in round 1 of the Bill Young Trophy and from deep in the trees to the right of the 18th sank his second shot for an amazing eagle; much jubilation and a huge well done Eddie!

BAR CARD ‘TOP UPS’ – YOUR HELP PLEASE?
If you are coming to a function, please ‘top up’ your card beforehand. This helps the staff and your fellow members when it is very busy at the start of the evening and you are not taking the attention of one of the bar staff for a longer period of time than necessary and perhaps having to wait for the credit card machine as well etc etc. ‘Top Up’ the day before whenever possible.

Visiting Golf Society
A golf society left a snack box for their halfway refreshments on the 10th tee this week. It was labelled for them.

When they arrived there they found that the players in front had helped themselves to the snacks and beverages, leaving not enough for the society members.

We had mainly members and very few visitor golfers on the course within the specific time period, so can only assume therefore that some of our members decided to help themselves. I sincerely hope that this was not the case as it reflects poorly upon us as a club.

Patio ParasolsWe appreciate that when the sun is shining it can become very hot on the patio particularly in the full glare of the sun. However our two parasols have not coped at all well with the breeze which is all too frequent across our patio. Requests to lower them when the wind rises have not always been followed and we are now in a situation whereby they have been damaged and will become unstable in anything more than flat calm conditions.

We therefore request that members adhere to the instructions of the staff and/or close the parasols if they begin to ‘rock ‘n roll’ in the breeze.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience that this may cause and ask for your understanding. We do not wish to risk accident or injury to any member or visitor on the patio.

We have had two written complaints from walkers recently.

WATCH OUT FOR WALKERS WHEN…

1. Teeing Off: on any of the holes which have footpaths crossing them. Please pay particular attention when playing the 2nd and 17th. Send one of your playing group up the viewing steps to ensure the fairway ahead is clear. A ‘near miss’ is both dangerous and frightening.

2. Taking Relief: Gentlemen – when turning away from your playing group to ‘take a pee’ in the bushes please make sure you are not surprising a walker coming from the opposite direction ! Better still use the loo on the 6th/14th.

Thank you.

TROPHY WINNERS 2018

Would all trophy winners please start to return their trophies to the club for engraving and re-presentation at the Trophy Evening on 15th November.

All Trophies must be returned to the Office by Friday 4th  October .

Every year we are left with a few unhappy members who either do not have an engraved trophy or a trophy at all , where previous winners have forgotten to return their silverware.

PLEASE RETURN YOUR TROPHIES IN PLENTY OF TIME

CLUBHOUSE DRESS CODE

Members should remember that the wearing of golf shoes (with or without spikes) in the clubhouse is NOT permitted. The only exception being in dry and fine weather when entering the bar to order a drink, which then must be taken outside onto the patio.

As the weather turns wetter and the conditions underfoot softer you will not be permitted to enter the bar at all with wet and muddy golf shoes.

Please note there is an air shoe cleaner adjacent to the putting green which should be used to clean grass and debris from golf shoes before entering the clubhouse at ALL times.

Please help us keep the clubhouse clean and tidy.

TIPS TO HELP YOU PLAY A WELL PACED ROUND….

  1. Watch where your ball has landed and then mark it in your mind by referencing a bush, tree or something you’ll remember 3 minutes later. I’ve seen golfers – with perfect eyesight – watch their balls land, and then, two minutes later have no clue where it is, resulting in someone else having to take the time to point it out.
  1. The more crowded the course, the less time you have to find a ball. The rule says 3 minutes, which is fine if you are in a competition, but not OK for casual golf which covers about 90% of play. And no excuses for balls being expensive. If you can’t afford to lose your ProVI, then you’re playing the wrong ball. If you are insistent on taking the full time searching then call the group behind through straight away!
  1. The better players should take some responsibility for poorer ones. If you’re hitting it 250 down the middle, then help the player who’s hitting it 50 yards offline every time, find his ball. The quality of your game gives you credibility, so use it for the good of golfers everywhere. That includes setting the example of replacing divots, repairing pitchmarks and keeping your group to a reasonable pace. Self policing your groups game is the best method. They will accept you telling them.
  1. Reduce the endless practice swings. They aren’t going to help and will only tire you out. There’s nothing wrong with a slow paced rehearsal swing, or a full paced practice swing for a chip or putt. You rarely see a good golfer go 100% practicing a full swing 4 or 5 times before playing his shot.
  1. Play ‘Ready Golf’. This means playing when you’re ready, not necessarily waiting for the golfer farthest from the green to go first. If your ball is near someone who’s lost theirs, hit your shot first, then go help them.
  1. Casual Play – It’s OK to make your own fourball rules for lost or OB shots, in casual play.  If your tee shot has gone OB or in the ‘cabbage’ agree in advance to drop a ball at the nearest point of relief to where you all agree the ball has been lost (under penalty of course , there might be 50p on the match !)
  1. Know when to pick up. Your not playing a competition medal round so know when to put the ball in your pocket. If there’s no one else on the course then feel free to prove to yourself you can score 14 on a hole! On Saturday and Sunday mornings it’s not acceptable. Take the max your handicap level allows and move on.
  2. Help out your fellow golfers. If you’re 3 feet from the pin and a playing partner hits out of the sand to 50 feet, rake the bunker so they can start reading their putt. Golf’s a great game for many reasons, not the least of which is helping one another.
  3. Be ready. Know when your turn to play is coming and be ready to go. Get your planning and club choosing done while someone else is playing. This is just as important on the green as in the fairway, maybe more so.
  1. Let other groups through when necessary. It’s NOT an attack on ability to let anyone play through. Be a responsible golfer , look behind you and know when to ‘pullover to the hard shoulder’. Sometimes your group runs into bad luck on a hole where everyone hits it into thick rough or the woods, let the next group straight through while you look. Remember, anyone who plays through feels twice as compelled not to hold up those behind.

Green News

Greens are recovering really well from Greens Maintenance work.

The Graden machine scarified down to a depth of 20mm and injected sand and seed straight back into the lines. Judging by the amount of detritus cleared out it was much needed! Around 30 tonnes of sand was applied to the greens during renovation. After 7 days the new seeds were visibly germinating. This is why the work is done in August, when we have the consistent ground temperatures.

Simon doesn’t expect this quite severe work using the Graden machine to be something we need to be doing every year, it is more likely we only need it every 3 years or so.

To get the job done, the team chopped and changed their hours to work around a late sand delivery on Monday and some heavy rain on Tuesday. Well done all!

The welcome rain has caused some disease to appear on the surface. With the combination of leaf wetness (moisture) and warm soil temperatures we have pretty much seen every disease you can get on a golf course over the last month.

Fairways are performing well with good growth and some recovery after the hotter days.

I have played a number of Hampshire courses during August and can honestly say that our fairways are miles ahead. We have heard this from visitors and from our own members who have played in away in matches.

Tees and Aprons again are performing well but have suffered some disease in the form of red thread, caused by a lack of nitrogen. Tees and aprons are receiving applications of Nitrogen to combat this problem.

Surrounds and rough are growing very well. Lots of grass to cut!

We hired in some plant machinery this month and have moved in the region of 100 tonnes of chalk from the range to the 13th Tee.

This has been done now in order to let it settle for a couple of months while the ground is nice and firm.

We have also moved some soil out of the local Fencing company’s yard on to the golf course and this soil will help build the 13th tee and with other projects. Leaf heaps have been turned and the 2 to 3-year-old mulch has been moved up to the range.

Our new range bunker is now settled in and in use. The liner and bunker edging are all artificial, creating a sealed unit so no more stones. We welcome your comments please as this design will spread around the golf course if all are in favour.

Ragwort pulling is under way.

The request to remove the ragwort came from a member of the public walking through the course (we also have many members who detest the plant).

We could be subject to an ASBO under the Ragwort Act of 2003 if we didn’t control it following a request from the “authorities”.

Natural England do take a different view!

I have attached 2 photos.

If you look closely, you will see a little stripy caterpillar in the bottom right of the attached picture.

It is the larva of the Cinnabar Moth – a beautiful native daytime moth (pictured) which only lives on Ragwort.

Natural England would prefer us to keep and encourage Ragwort.

We have decided to clear away from paths and bridleways, leaving other areas for the sheep to tackle. Yes, the farmer is very happy with this as there is plenty of other food to balance out.

Many thanks to all who helped with the first two stints with one more booked on Tuesday 10th September. One more big push and we will have cleared as much as we plan so please come and help.

I am pleased to report a slight reduction in damage to the holes following this article last month. Thank you!

We have also asked members to avoid taking trolleys between greenside bunkers and greens.

Due to weather conditions, we do have areas of wear around many greens so could we please avoid taking trolleys on the fringes. Where possible please keep trolleys well away from greens. The worn areas have now been whitelined as GUR.

A candidate for the trainee’s position has been interviewed and will be doing a week’s work experience with us from Tuesday 27th August fingers crossed it all works out and he joins the team as the number 6.

Best wishes for a great month of golf!

Mark Tiplady

A Look at the Rules

Answer.

The Player scored a 5 which included a two shot penalty for playing a wrong ball.

Other examples of penalties that are not disregarded because they also apply to the ball in play include:

  • Making a practice stroke during a hole (Rule 5.5a).
  • Playing a wrong ball (Rule 6.3c(1)).
  • Asking for or giving advice (Rule 10.2a).

Interpretation 6.3c(1)/1

100 Club

The winners of the 100 Club prize draw for September were:

£100 Annie Beal

£50 Wendy Pidduck

£32 Pat Wallis

£32 Bob Archer

£32 Di Peisley

£32 Brian Overton

Back to back wins for the Beals – Ron last month and Annie this month.  This is also the first month Di Peisley has entered the draw so a great result for Di.  As the saying goes -You have to be in it to win it!  Congratulations to all our winners. The next draw will take place week beginning 23 September 2019 – look for the result on the Secretary’s notice board.

100 Club Salver Stableford Competition.

The annual 100 Club Stableford Competition was played on Friday 2 August on a perfect summer day.  37 members entered and overall the scores reflected the ideal conditions.  The winner of the Salver was Ron Marwick with an excellent 43 points, in 2nd place was Jean Coveyduck with 40 points and 3rd was Ray Panter with 38 points.

Fifty members sat down to a two-course hot meal in the evening having enjoyed pre-dinner drinks on the patio.  The prizes were presented by Pat Wallis who gave members a brief update on the changes that had taken place in the last year.

What is the 100 Club?

The Alresford Golf Club 100 Share Club was started in 1987 to raise extra funds to support and enhance the club Centenary celebrations which took place in 1990.

Almost £5,000 was added to the Centenary Fund – a fantastic contribution.

It proved so popular that members who had joined chose to continue the scheme indefinitely.  The ongoing objective of the 100 Club was then agreed as being “to provide funds for capital expenditure to enhance the Golf Course and/or Club House”.  This is still very much the objective and projects supported by the 100 Club would generally be considered ‘extras’ and not necessarily within the Golf Club budget. Many items have been purchased over the years with the new rattan patio furniture being the most recent.  In recent years the 100 Club has purchased the drinking fountain on the 4th/15th holes, the finger post signage, the Information Board and Clock at the first tee and the automated Defibrillator in the Entrance Hall.

So, can I join the 100 Club?

Yes of course.

New members are always welcome and so as a Golf Club member you can actively contribute towards future enhancements to the facilities on the Golf Course or Clubhouse whilst having the opportunity to win a monthly cash prize. Or why not increase your existing shareholding for an even better chance of a prize.

Shares can be purchased for £1 per month paid for by Standing Order and there is no limit on the number which can be held – most members have between 1 and 5 shares.  Each share is allocated a number which is entered into the monthly draw with a top prize of £100, with a second prize of £50 and four other prizes of £32.

Mixed Matches

A full list of all our mixed match fixtures is on the board in the foyer. Volunteer lists for subsequent matches will be posted periodically. Any member with a CONGU handicap is welcome to play. It is very much hoped that more members will avail themselves of the opportunity to play mixed golf both at home and on some good away courses. All the matches are played in a very friendly manner and everyone is welcome, no matter what their handicap. An e-mail will be sent to all those chosen to play and the team list will be posted on the board.

A decision has been made that Five Day members may play in the weekend matches if we are unable to field a team from amongst the Seven Day members. There will be a column on the volunteer sheet for Five Day members to sign up. No green fees will be payable. It is hoped that Five Day Members will take advantage of this opportunity to play at the weekend, both at home and away, if required.

Again this year we will be continuing with a smart/casual dress code for our match meals at home and it seems likely that other clubs are also going down this path. There will be no need for gentlemen to wear jacket and tie, unless they so wish. We are also looking at the possibility of serving brunch prior to some of our home matches, instead of having a meal afterwards. Any feedback on this (no pun intended!) would be welcome.
