Fore Info November 2018
Overseas member success in Switzerland!
David Marshall, an overseas member living presently in Switzerland, has had recent success captaining La Largue golf club team in the Swiss Clubs National knockout for handicaps 10-18. The Ryder cup style team event has 6 rounds covering 76 clubs with 36 hole matches held monthly from April to October. Three Foursomes followed by six singles in the afternoons make for a tough challenge. David and team reached the final losing out to hot favourites and now 3 time winners, Limpachtal golf club.
Management Corner
Suspension of the Reciprocal Scheme
In view of the continuing success of the Winter Membership scheme, which has so far attracted 40 members for the period 1st November 2018 to 31st March 2019, the Management Committee has decided to suspend the reciprocal scheme we have with a number of other clubs for this period. This has been done so as to reduce the number of visitors who are able to play on our course at no cost during the winter period when days are shorter and we have the additional traffic from our own extra winter members. Any existing bookings already made via the Office for our members to play at reciprocal courses will be honoured.
From the Club Captain
Congratulations to Brian Overton and Gill Fremantle for winning the Cock & Hen Trophy with a very impressive 45 points. This is the second successive year Rooster Overton has been in the winning pair.
In the Men’s penultimate friendly against Ryde Pirates away, we came second, however, the team enjoyed the golf, despite the rain. The ‘Boys Day Out’ to the Isle of Wight was also much enjoyed. The last game of the year will be at home to Stoneham, a match that was originally to have been played in August.
At times it has been a struggle for Graham Marshallsay, Vice-Captain, to get a team together; however, we have won far more matches than we have lost. Well done to all those who have played.
October was a quiet month for the Men, but this certainly was not the case for the Ladies. They successfully hosted the Hampshire Ladies Past Captains with 140 Ladies playing and the Ladies and Assistants PRO-AM in which 108 played. These events give us the opportunity to show other Clubs what a great course we have. Our thanks to Tonny Maxwell and Sally Willis for organising these events.
What a great success the Ladies Section have achieved in starting up the “Alresford Scratch Trophy” which is a new competition in the County. Five teams played this year and now we have three further Clubs wishing to join; Stoneham, Royal Winchester and Romsey.
The Bell on the first hole has now been moved 15 yards closer to the tee to ensure that it can be more readily heard, even in poor weather conditions. The rational is to increase the time between games and reduce congestion on the course.
This will hopefully promote a smoother flow of play and reduce the build-ups that sometimes occur around the course. The feedback from members who have spoken to me has been very positive and they confirm it has reduced some of the delays often encountered. Better to wait longer on the Tee rather than in between your shots!
The Abba Tribute Act who performed at the Club on the 13th of October certainly put a feather in the cap of the Social Committee. It proved to be a most entertaining evening. Special thanks must go to Mike Battisson who put in a lot of work and time to make a very successful evening.
During the year, I have received many comments from visitors to our Club. The common theme has been that “it is a lovely course with great greens, excellent catering with delicious food and a very friendly atmosphere”. We have every reason to be proud of our Club.
Representing Alresford Golf Club has been a great honour and my thanks to you all for your support and making it such a memorable year for me. I have been fortunate in having such an excellent Ladies Captain and Vets Captain to work with. I should also thank David Maskery for ensuring I did what was required of me and for giving me solutions to the inevitable problems that arise. I have very much enjoyed working with all of them. My Vice-Captain, Graham Marshallsay will soon take up the role of Captain. I am sure you will all join me in wishing Graham all the best for the coming year.
Finally, I must thank our Editor, Andy Thomsen for all his hard work and the patience he has shown me during the year!
It would be nice to see you all at the Trophy Presentation evening on the 16th November, the AGM on the 23rd and the Captain’s “Drive in” on the 25th.
Brian Wright
Ladies Section
So sadly, for me, this is it…my last report for FORE INFO…! Where has the year gone? I have to start with the first of my many THANK YOU’s and this is a really big one… Andy Thomsen who works so hard to put FORE INFO together … and does such a fantastic job. Andy you are a star!!
I would also like to congratulate Club Captain, Brian Wright, Vets Captain, Chris Thompson and Junior Captain, Will Briggs for their very successful year, we can all relax now!!
The Ladies section has had a busy month. We held a Celebration day at Alresford for the teams who had taken part in our new Alresford Scratch Trophy. The winners this year were Hockley. This competition has been a great success with more Clubs now wanting to join in. So next year, Royal Winchester, Romsey, Stoneham and The Army will also be taking part. So once again, my congratulations to Lynne Cowser and Jane Scott who started this and have run it so well and also to The Ladies Committee, Captains Committee and Management Committee who all supported the competition. I believe it is a great attribute to Alresford Golf Club.
The Knight Cup semi finals and finals were held at Alresford this year between Burley, Osborne, South Winchester and Oak Park… the final was in the afternoon between Burley and South Winchester with the victors being South Winchester. It was a beautiful day for it and Alresford looked at its best! Many compliments were paid to our course from the Competitors and spectators.
Alresford Cup day was a horrible morning weather wise so the start time was put back by a couple of hours. I started on the 10th and then followed the last group round as Shepherd, all very nice girls, the youngest being 11 and already playing off 22. Surrey won and it turned out to be a nice day despite the weather being cold and damp. Once again, Alresford were thanked for being so adaptable and hosting a great event.
The Autumn Meeting went without a hitch due to brilliant organisation by Sandra and Di. Everyone was in good spirits even though this was the last major event of the season. Winners on the day were Mandy Overton, Gunnel Berry and Charlotte Marsh (despite being injured!). The introduction of a 9 hole competition was well received and the winner was Jo White paired with Gill Freemantle and Mandy Overton.
Tonny Maxwell is outgoing President of the Hampshire Ladies Past Captains and as such hosted the Autumn meeting at Alresford. With 140 Ladies playing this was a huge event. My thanks go to Annie Beal, Jennifer Clelland and Sue Masser for helping with this in my absence. The feedback I have received from the HLPC Committee has been outstanding. They especially thanked us for the warm welcome they received, the Course and the meal…!
For the 17th year running the Ladies Assistants PRO-AM was wonderfully arranged by Sally Willis with 108 players from 36 Clubs. Alresford was looking its best, and the curry afterwards smelled delicious. Congratulations to Martin Adams from Swanmore who won the individual Pro’s prize and his Ladies Team from Meon Valley who won the Team event.
Thanks also to Malcolm and Jane Scott for the presentation and prizes and as always all the help they give putting on this event.
The usual friendly rivalry and banter took place between the Vets and Ladies for their annual combat. The format this year was American Greensomes which was well received. Despite the Ladies trying their best we were just beaten by 5 matches to 4 matches. Lots of the matches were very close though which I believe made it more enjoyable for everyone. Lovely meal to follow so as always thanks to the Chris and Kelly Pullinger and to the Greenstaff for all their hard work on the course.
The Vets, Ladies and Juniors competition was great fun and Chris and I had the honour of playing with Will Briggs… goodness can he hit a long ball! The worthy winners were Wynne, Sue and Wynne’s grandson Bertie… super ending to a lovely day.
So, finally a massive thank you to my fantastic Committee, who have all worked so hard this year, and to all the Staff who are a very committed and hard working bunch! Thank you to Jean for asking me to be her Vice Captain and thanks to Sue, who has backed me so solidly this year. My best wishes to her, and her Committee for 2019, I hope she has as much fun as I have.
And thank you to all of you for your kind words and support this year… I have loved every minute of it. I hope to see lots of you at the Ladies AGM on Saturday 24th November, so I can thank you in person.
Love and best wishes
Mary

Armistice Day Competition
The sign-up for the Armistice Day competition closes on Sunday 4th November – details in the October issue of Fore Info. The draw for tees will be done on Monday 5th November and posted on the notice board in the entrance hall and emailed to competitors.
Trophy Presentation Evening
The Trophy Presentation Evening will be on Friday 16th November. If you’ve forgotten which medals, Stablefords and trophies you’ve won this season, there are lists of the medal and Stableford winners, and the winners and runners-up of the board and trophy competitions displayed in the changing rooms. This is the only occasion when all the Club’s trophies and honours are on display, so I would encourage all members to attend not only to see the wonderful display but also to support and acknowledge the accomplishments of the winners. Obviously, award ceremonies work best when the recipients are present, so I make a special request to the winners of our trophies that they make every effort to attend.
Winter Leagues
The draw for the league stage of the Winter Mixed Foursomes and the Lombard 4BBB has been posted on the notice boards. Since two of the leagues in the Winter Mixed have 6 pairs the playing time for the league matches has been extended. All league matches must be completed by Sunday 24th February, after which the draw for the knock-out stage will be made.
Winter Eclectic
The Men’s Winter Eclectic will start later this month. As in previous years, the entry fee will be £5 and sign-up will be in the Pro’s Shop.
Some Reminders
All the temporary greens are either marked by a white circle on an area of the fairway or by a ‘Lift & Drop’ sign on a cut area off the fairway. Temporary greens marked as such are classed as putting greens. If your ball lies on a temporary green you must lift and drop the ball, without penalty, within one club length of the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole you are playing to. Similarly, when your ball comes to rest on a normal green and it is not the green for that hole, you must lift and drop the ball, without penalty, within one club length of the nearest point of relief. It’s also a good idea to avoid walking across the temporary greens unnecessarily and to take trolleys around them as you would a normal green.
When the sheep arrive later this month, we will have a Local Rule in force which defines the sheep enclosure as Ground Under Repair from which entry into and play from is prohibited. If your ball is known to be in the sheep enclosure or it is virtually certain that a ball that hasn’t been found is in the sheep enclosure then you must substitute another ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club length of the nearest point of relief from the point at which the ball crossed the boundary of the sheep enclosure and not nearer the hole. Relief may also be taken from surrounding fence to the sheep enclosure.
New Rules of Golf
As the new Rules of Golf will be effective from 1st January 2019, we plan to offer some sessions highlighting the main changes to the rules which will affect everyone. Potentially there could be 2 or 3 sessions between now and the end of January. We will post notices when the dates and the numbers we can accommodate for each session are finalised.
George Clelland
A Look at the Rules
Question.
A Bramble growing off the course interferes with a players swing. As the Bramble is growing off the course, may the player bend it out of the way or take relief under rule 24-2?
Vets Section
Since the last magazine, the final two friendly matches of the season have now been played, both home and away to Cowdray Park, both of which were won convincingly. Cowdray Park itself was in great shape and the views of the South Downs from the course are quite distracting. So we did well to concentrate on the golf.
The Vets bagman trophy was played on the 10th October, amongst those who did the duty of running the roll up at least once during the year. It was won by Tony Smythe with loads of points. Thanks to all those who helped make our roll ups so successful again this year, and well done to Tony. The handicap guys are having a look at your card!
We had a very successful Vets vs Ladies match this year (cross check Mary Panter’s report in the ladies section) played under rules chosen by the ladies. We played an American Greensomes, with the vets playing off the whites and the ladies off the reds but with their shots from the yellow card. It was the closest match in years, Vets winning 5/4. Unfortunately we were not able to raise a team as large as the ladies team so there were 4 extra ladies, two of whom agreed to go trans-gender and play for the Vets. Including that team made the final score 6/4. It was competitive but very convivial, as usual.
In a couple of days we reconvene for the vets, ladies and juniors match, in which we play in teams of three. It is the largest field in years, a testament to the strength of our junior section.
The vets and partners dinner is now closed and I look forward to seeing those of you who are attending at the event. Should be fun. And finally, the vets golf and AGM will be on the 7th November.
Well, that’s nearly it then. A whole year has gone by since I took up the reins and there are only a few weeks before I hand over to the very capable Drew Fielden, next years captain. A few words of thanks are in order.
First, the catering team have been great this year. We have had some exceptional meals and we now regularly hear the away teams commenting on the great quality of the food at Alresford.
The Vets Committee has worked really hard as usual and in particular I want to single out Dennis Jones as fixtures secretary and Wynne Tufnell as tournament secretary. Nothing much would happen without those two guys. Dennis is retiring at this years AGM and being replaced by Tony Freeman. Wynne will retire as tournament secretary at the end of next year, but Gareth Rees is already in charge of the trophies and will shadow Wynne next year with a view to taking over the tournaments for the 2019/20 year. Ken Coburn has done sterling work as treasurer, despite not playing in vets matches (although, contrary to protestations, he is actually old enough to qualify) and Graham Lumb has been great as Secretary. Tony Stanton has always represented our views to the Greens Committee and given very helpful explanations of the changes to the course that are being made. And Geoff Procter has been a wise head as past captain. Geoff Jenkins has also been immensely helpful in keeping the scores of the summer matches so we can award the captains tankard for “most valuable player”. Robin Bashford ran the winter league last year and is, of course, already selecting teams for winter 2018/19, so many thanks to him for stepping up. In addition, many of you have offered friendly advice at various times during the season or spotted “deliberate” mistakes on the board – like dates, times and venues of matches – mere details, of course but important nonetheless. Thanks for keeping the season on the rails chaps.
We have an immensely successful Vets Section at Alresford and it has been my pleasure to be Captain this year. I know its in safe hands, and I look forward to many fun days in the future as a has-been.
Chris Thompson

RECIPROCALS
Due to the unprecedented success of our WINTER MEMBERSHIP programme this year combined with the additional wear on the course last winter due to the weather and resulting additional visitor play, the Management Committee has decided to suspend the reciprocal arrangements with our partner clubs during the period November to March.
Any reciprocals currently booked will be honoured but no further bookings will be made by the Office until 1st April (or before if notified).
We appreciate that many of you enjoy the ability to visit other clubs, but historically we receive many more visits during the ‘wet months’ than our members visiting other clubs. At this stage all our partner clubs are happy to resume our arrangements as normal in the spring.

Did you know…
Contrary to what some members may think , members playing in a match DO NOT have priority starting on the 1st tee. The only exception being if a match has ended ‘all square’ on the 18th and the match is required to play on down the 1st.
BAR CARD ‘TOP UPS’ – YOUR HELP PLEASE?
If you are coming to a function, please ‘top up’ your card beforehand. This helps the staff and your fellow members when it is very busy at the start of the evening and you are not taking the attention of one of the bar staff for a longer period of time than necessary and perhaps having to wait for the credit card machine as well etc etc. ‘Top Up’ the day before whenever possible.
MENS SHOWERS CLOSURE – REPAIRS
The repairs to the mens shower wall will take place week beg. Monday 5th November and may last 3-4 days. During this time the showers will be out of use. We apologise for the inconvenience. They will be opened for use as soon as is practical.
PRACTICE GROUND / DRIVING RANGE
Members are advised that there will be Hampshire County Junior Girls training taking place on Saturday 17th November at the club. This will involve more intensive usage of the practice areas and driving range during the morning. We will keep some bays available for members.
Green News
November and the remarkable weather continues! This is great news for golfers but somewhat confusing for nature. Leaves are falling while grass is still growing. Rooks are feasting and destroying large areas of the course (see below). You will have noticed the new members of our workforce dotted around the course. They don’t move very much but still earn their corn! For your information, other courses (noticeably South Winchester) have been completely decimated by rook damage. We will continue to take every option to reduce the impact of this pest.
The greens remain in outstanding condition. Adam has raised the cut to 4mm and is rolling rather than cutting some days. They are true and still well paced. October agronomically is the highest month in disease pressure on the grass sward. Long periods of high humidity and warm evening temperatures create prime conditions for fungal activity. This requires careful fungicide management as curative control is no longer available. Preventative control is the only option. Application timings are crucial due to humidity spikes and cost to keep the green sward free of any fungal activity in the form of microdochium nivale (fusarium). The green staff have managed this well and have a healthy sward going in to winter.
Leaves will be the next large task. Blowing and collecting is visible and obvious but transportation and storage also highly time consuming. We do carefully store and reuse, creating nutrient rich top-soil bulking agent. Our leaves are blown, collected and stored on the 12th for 2 years to decompose in an aerobic capacity. Thereafter they are transported to the range holding area for a year and further decomposition before being added to nutrient deficient soil to gain quality high nutrient soil for our future construction projects.
You may have noticed that the circular seat, in memory of Helen Connelly, has been relocated from adjacent to the 7th tee to a position overlooking the practice area. We have been approached by friends close to Helen recommending this move and agreed to an experimental relocation. Helen’s sister Michelle thoroughly approves of this. We are looking at various options to improve the 1st tee, it’s approach and the practice facilities and feel that the seat is safer there We expect it will be used by parents of juniors while they are using the chipping, putting greens and short game facilities as well as by friends and family as well as members wishing to take advantage of the views from this elevated position.
Finally, look out for notices regarding winter rules and tee changes. This decision is made by the competitions committee, when weather conditions demand.
Happy golfing!
Mark Tiplady
Battling the chaffer grubs and rooks
You will have all noticed areas around the course which appear to have been ‘torn up’ as though by a wild animal. Whilst both deer and badgers do cause damage on and around golf courses, they are not to blame on this occasion.
The problem is not unique to us and within the golf industry has become one of the most distressing problems greenkeepers have had to face over recent years.
Chafer grubs are about 15mm in length and are the larvae of several species of chafer beetles. Each female beetle can lay up to 50 eggs which hatch below the surface of the turf and feed on the roots, killing the grass resulting in slow growth and yellow patches. This also cause the grass to become unstable and break away to clumps. These grubs are a seasonal feast for birds and whilst small birds can stab straight into the turf, much as you see on your own lawns at home when are seeking worms and grubs, rooks and crows will pull up large swathes of turf as they seek the foodsource. Damage to the golf industry has been estimated at £85 million from either lost income or damage repair.
Our greenstaff have had the ‘soul destroying’ task every morning for the past month or so of seeing the huge areas of damage that the birds have caused over night and trying to tidy and prepare the golf course before golfers begin play each day. This involves removing the destroyed turf, raking, levelling and then either re-seeding or turfing as deemed appropriate. Of some comfort is the understanding that we are not amongst the worst hit courses in the county or area. The grubs also do not distinguish between member or proprietary courses, rich or poor.
You will have seen and heard the various methods we are currently employing to try and minimise this problem and maybe heard talk about others;
Chemicals – Acelepryn is a new chemical which is still seeking formal approval after testing. Emergency permission was granted this year for use between June and September but only on tees and greens. It has a limited application period and can not (or should not !) be used on fairways. As we haven’t suffered any damage to tees or greens yet we wouldn’t have been able to use it anyway.
Mechanical means such as rotary knives – these are tools that crush the larvae during the months when they are nearest the surface. The grubs do not like disturbance which is thankfully why their presence is less on well kept greens. This slitting of areas of the course is both ‘hit and miss’ literally, time consuming , disruptive to golfers and has been found to aid the birds in lifting the turf.
Nematodes – these are microscopic animals that are sprayed onto the turf and will attack the chafer grubs. This works well in the laboratory but in practice is difficult as the nematodes need to be applied very precisely to high concentrated areas of grubs. Machines are being developed that can inject nematodes directly into the soil but as yet are not readily available and will no doubt be expensive.
Organic products derived from citrus oil or garlic have been mentioned but those courses that have tried these products have seen little benefit if any.
Unfortunately there are no silver bullet solutions and we have found that the good old-fashioned scarecrow, hawk kites and bangers all work just as well. We have operated a programme of shooting and then hanging a dead bird in the areas of activity. We appreciate that this is unsightly and can be distressing to some and so have avoided this at the moment.
We will continue to do our best to present the golf course in the best condition as possible subject to the influencing factors, many over which we have no control. Please bear with us and your understanding and appreciation of the difficulties our Greenstaff are facing at present is welcome.
A Look at the Rules
Answer.
No, such action would be a breach of Rule 13-2
100 Club
The winners of the 100 Club prize draw for November were:
£100 – Carol Clark
£50 – Carole Young
£32 – Elaine Spreadbury
£32 – Linda Glynn
£32 – Ray Grainger
£32 – Dudley George
Congratulations to the winners. The December draw will take place in the week beginning 26th November.
You will receive a statement of the 100 Club’s finances included in the notice for the Club AGM. We have paid out £3368 in prizes this year. Only the cost of the replacement drinking fountain for the 4th/15th tee is shown for this year, but we promised to fund most of the cost of the replacement patio furniture next year.
It would be appreciated if prize winners could cash their cheques promptly as the value of uncleared cheques remains quite high. However, we have quite a healthy balance in the bank which allows us to support most projects as and when they arise.
David Farr and Robin Good have been Trustees of the 100 Club for almost as long as anyone can remember. David is planning on moving away from Alresford in the coming months and Robin has also decided to retire from being a Trustee but will continue to support the 100 Club and give advice and guidance to the new Trustees. David and Robin have invited Ian Swann, a long-standing member of the 100 Club, and myself to take on the role of Trustee. We have both accepted the position. Finally, I have decided to relinquish the role of administrator of the 100 Club. Pat Wallis has agreed to take over this position in due course.
Not a member of the 100 Club?
The objective of the Alresford Golf Club 100 Club is to raise funds for projects and items requiring capital expenditure that will enhance the Golf Course and/or the Clubhouse. Such projects would generally be considered as ‘extras’ and not necessarily be within the Club budget. The 100 Club was launched in 1987 to raise funds to augment the Centenary celebrations of the Golf Club in 1990, but at the request of the members, the 100 Club has continued to raise funds for items such as the Information Board and Clock on the 1st tee and the Automatic External Defibrillator in the Entrance Hall.
If you’re not a member of the 100 Club, you can become one for as little as £1 per month. Shares in the 100 Club are purchased for £1 per month and there is no limit on the number of shares which can be held. In general, most members have between 1 and 5 shares and pay by monthly direct debit, though it’s also possible to pay quarterly or annually. Each share is allocated a number which in entered in the monthly draw. The top prize is £100, with a second prize of £50 and four other prizes of £32. For more information contact George Clelland on 01962 735008 or george.clelland@btinternet.com, or call in to the Secretary’s office.
