Management Corner

Clubhouse Development

By the time you receive this, a small group from the Management Committee will have met to conclude the pitch we wish to make to interested local architects, to kick-start the phase of producing ‘creative visuals’ of what the clubhouse could look like in the future.  Once we have these they will be shared with our membership, both online and physically in the lobby of the clubhouse.

In parallel, necessary work continues exploring the various financial options needed to support this important club development.

We are acutely conscious of the sensitivity of raising finance for investment in the club at this time, or indeed anytime, and you should be assured that we have every confidence in being able to agree a design that is both realistic and affordable; one that, as far as possible, will meet the great majority of the improvements you voted for.

In broad terms of timing, our aspiration is to gain final membership approval and sign-off for the changes before the end of this year, with completion of works well in time for next year’s end-of-year seasonal activities.

On other matters, all current subscription categories are at or above both planned levels, both against budget and versus last year; 7 day, 5 day, Winter, HPLS, Green Fees, Societies – even the Bar! 

We are in good shape, but must continue to build for the future.

From the Club Captain

I am very pleased to start with congratulations to Harriet Riches who won the Peter Gregory Salver, for the 2nd time with a very good score of 45 points. In 2nd place was Oscar Vaughan on 41 pts and Marcus Kail in 3rd with 40 pts. Marcus continued his good form in the 2nd round of the Linnets with a gross 70 (net 63), the best gross score of the weekend. It’s great to see our young players performing so well.

The social committee produced another good fun event with the murder mystery evening Allo Allo meets Dad’s Army meets Eastenders!

A large number  of the attendees got into the spirit by dressing as characters from the shows. Some more enthusiastically than others!

 

 

My congratulations this month also go to Ian Jones who completed the London Marathon in a respectable official time of 4:44 (his actual time would probably be a bit quicker as congestion at the start slows things down), his efforts raised £1600 for his nominated charity – Breast Cancer Care – well done Ian.

The men’s Gales Hockley and County 7’s teams were knocked out in the first rounds despite putting up a good fight, better luck next year. There has been better success with the Men’s friendly matches with only one loss so far this season. The latest result was a win away at Corhampton in a 3 way match against Corhampton and Waterlooville. Mary Rook is doing a very good job in arranging the Mens Friendly teams, but at times we struggle for numbers, please put your name down to play in at least one match this year, they are good fun but played in a competative but friendly spirit.

 

This month’s “found ball” I think belongs to Phil! Do you recognise it? The owner can collect it from the Secretary’s Office, if they wish to donate a few pennies to the Captain’s Charity bottle on the bar that would be appreciated but entirely voluntary. If you recognise the ball as belonging to one of your playing partners and they don’t fess up please email me captain@alresfordgolf.co.uk and I may embarrass them!

The Captains’ Charity Day this year is on Sunday 9th June, this year there will be 2 competitions for you to enter, a foursomes knockout played over 6 holes – 10th, 11th, 12th, 16th, 17th and 18th, if it’s all square after the 18th the tie will be decided by all 4 playing a shot into the 18th green, nearest the pin wins. The other competition is played over the front 9 as an individual stableford, and you can enter as many times as you wish with the best card winning. The 1st and 2nd round losers in the foursomes are guaranteed an entry into the 9 hole stableford competition if they wish. Malcolm will be running a putting competition throughout the day and food will be available all day. If we get some fine weather it should be a good day.

As reported last month my wife, Sarah, and I will be undertaking a 100 mile cycle ride on 2nd June in Cambridgeshire. The ride is part of the Tour of Cambridgeshire a UCI sanctioned event, we will be raising money for the club charity –the UK Sepsis Trust – and Breast Cancer Care, both charities are very close to our hearts for differing reasons. If you would like to sponsor us you can do so online at Virgin Moneygiving or by signing the sponsor sheet that is on display in the foyer of the golf club.

 

Finally, my thanks to Ann Younger who kindly donated the Easter Hamper, thanks also to all the members who purchased tickets too, £182.50 was raised and added to the club charity the UK Sepsis Trust. The winning ticket was drawn by Kelly and Clare Monkhouse is enjoying the chocolate and other goodies!

Ladies Section

Once again we have had some beautiful weather for golf but as I write this it has reverted to more typical April showers! 

It has been a very busy month with Friendly Matches at Royal Winchester and Bramshaw and at home against Romsey.  I do urge you all to sign up for these if you have not already done so as they are an excellent way of meeting ladies from other clubs, making good friends and playing other courses.  

We have also had some horrible weather – notably for the Vets and Ladies Breeze Up on the 4th April.  Never has my wet weather gear been quite so wet!  The competition ended after 9 holes and a pat on the back to everyone who braved the course that day!  My greatful thanks go to Wynne Tuffnell for so ably organising the event.  

We have had some excellent results from the internal competitions resulting in quite a few handicap reductions and also externally our Juniors also played well during their Easter holidays – congratulations to you all and lets hope this bodes well for the rest of us who are still lingering near the same figure we started the year with!

The Australian Spoons competition proved popular with 16 entries.  Congratulations to Jenny Dillon and Jo Youngs for winning with an excellent 37 points, they will be representing us in the area final at Basingstoke in July and we wish them good luck.  As this competition has been a success we will look to try and include it in the calendar again next year if at all possible.

Our Ladies Stoneham Cup Team began their group stage with a fantastic 7-0 win at home against Bramshott Hill – well done Lesley Martin and the team for a great start. 

Our next match is away at Bramshott Hill in early May so good luck and let’s hope for a good away win there.

We played a 9 hole roll up with five of the Academy Ladies just before Easter which was very rewarding.  The ladies all played very well and we look forward to welcoming them as full members of Alresford Golf Club very soon.

Socially I attended the Allo Allo night at the club which was very entertaining with great food on a french theme and some interesting role playing by some of the audience!  Well done Carol Roe and team for putting this fun evening together.

The Easter Bank Holiday Monday Flag competition was also a great success with 48 people playing and a further two sitting down for the meal afterwards.  If you haven’t played I recommend this to you next year – you are drawn with a partner and given a number of shots to play the course in greensomes format – when you run out of shots you plant your team flag where the golf ball lies.  We made it to the 17th green before running out but there were five flags on the 18th – an excellent achievement and well done to the winners Merv Fullbrook and Jackie Coulson.  Many thanks to Marion Bruce and Claire Gould for organising this event so well.

Coming up we have the Spring Meeting with 66 ladies playing which is always a good day.  Please do look at the “What’s On” sheet for May which has details of all competitions in which you can take part and highlights the Sign Up Sheets that are currently available.  In particular please do consider coming on the Ladies Awayday to Crane Valley on the 13th June.  This is always a good day out and I hope as many as possible of you will take part.

Club Championships

The notices for the Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championships will be posted in the Changing Rooms in early May. The entry sheet for the Men’s Championships will be in the Pro’s Shop. As in the last two years, both Championships will be held over 2 days on 29th and 30th June. The closing date for entry will be Friday 21st June, and full details of the qualification requirements and conditions of competition will be listed on the notices. Please note that all participants in the 36-hole competitions over the Championship weekend must play on both days. 

Upcoming Competitions

During May and early June we have some competitions I’d like to draw your attention to as they’re either slightly out of the ordinary. 

  • Courage & Barclay 4BBB This competition on Sunday 5th May is for pairs in any combination, 2 men, 2 ladies, a man and a lady, or an adult and a junior. Everyone, of course, must have a competition handicap. There is no formal organisation, so make up your own playing groups and arrange a convenient time. When you enter your score, the system will ask you to identify your playing partner, and you’ll need to make sure put your scores against the correct player.
  • Jack Moody Cross-country Scramble A really enjoyable scramble across the golf course on the afternoon of Friday 24th May. While some us take every opportunity of playing to the 3rd green from the 7th fairway for many it will be a new experience … remember, no distance measuring devices allowed, so you have to guess!
  • Harry May – Two Generations This Foursomes Stableford competition is for parents/grandparents playing with child/grandchild etc … given the golfing dynasties we have in the club, some of the child entries are not that young! The Entry Sheet will be on the notice board in the Entrance Hall.

Supplementary Scores

Could I remind everyone who submits Supplementary Scores that having signed-in to submit a Supplementary Score, you must enter a score. Up to now we have ignored any instances of scores not being entered. However, from 1st June, if a score is not recorded and/or a card is not returned, unless we have good reason not to, we will treat this as a No Return which will mean the handicap of the player concerned will be increased by 0.1.

Vets Section

The Vets summer friendly matches have got off to a great start with wins in 8 of the first 9; 6 of them home games. We lost the 7th rather emphatically away to Hockley on a very blustery day, but recovered our winning streak at Rowlands Castle a few days later in  glorious spring weather and then again at home against Hamptworth. These matches are great fun and an opportunity to enjoy other excellent courses. The more volunteers to play the merrier.

 27 mixed pairs signed up for the Vets and Ladies Breeze Up at the start of April on what certainly seemed like the worst day of 2019 to date! The golf was nearly a wash-out with heavy rain and bitterly cold conditions. The match was

shortened to just 9 holes with separate prizes for front and back nines. Not all entrants completed the 9 holes and some decided not to start. Longest drive and nearest the pin prizes for both men and ladies were also on offer for the hardy souls who played and a warming lunch was enjoyed afterwards. Excellent organisation and flexibility was displayed by Wynne Tufnell our competitions secretary. The front nine competition was won by the pairing of the Ladies and Vets captains and the back nine by Jan Harring and Keith Turner; nearest the pin prizes went to David Nightingale and Mal Hope-Mason and the longest drives by Jenny Dillon and Robin Bashford. It was an opportunity to size up the ‘opposition’ ahead of our autumn needle match against each other.

PLEASE REMEMBER – When starting from the 10th tee

You may NOT begin or resume your round from the 10th tee if there is a group playing the 9th hole and they have left the tee. It does not matter whether your playing group is smaller or larger than the one playing the hole.

If you start from the 10th tee you DO NOT have priority on the 1st tee if there is a queue. You must take your turn at the back of the queue.

Are you a good player, a good golfer, or both?   Part 2

Good players have low handicaps, usually hit the ball a mile, and occasionally post very low scores. Good golfers follow the rules, fill divots, repair ball marks, and practice good etiquette each and every time they are on the course.

Rule 1.2 is an important Rule in the Rules of Golf as it details the conduct that is expected of all players and what is meant by spirit of the game.

Rule 1.2 reads as follows: All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by:

  1. Acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules (whether set by the R&A or your own clubs committee), applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play.
  2. Showing consideration to others – for example, by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others (including greenkeepers!), and not distracting the play of another player.

Top Tip – in social golf play ‘Ready Golf’ i.e. examples of “ready golf” in action are:

      • Hitting a shot when safe to do so if a player farther away faces a challenging shot and is taking time to assess their options
      • Shorter hitters playing first from the tee or fairway if longer hitters have to wait
      • Hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play
      • Hitting a shot before helping someone to look for a lost ball
      • Putting out even if it means standing close to someone else’s line
      • Hitting a shot if a person who has just played from a greenside bunker is still farthest from the hole but is delayed due to raking the bunker
      • When a player’s ball has gone over the back of a green, any player closer to the hole but chipping from the front of the green should play while the other player is having to walk to their ball and assess their shot
  1. Taking good care of the course – for example, by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ball-marks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course.

There have been several recent observed occasions when groups have been clearly seen not repairing or ignoring their pitchmarks when balls have clearly landed on the green.

We all have a responsibility to help maintain the course and no matter how bad a golfer you may think you are  – you will still make pitchmarks !

Top Tip – when arriving at the green, repair your pitchmark and look for one other to do as well

You will have no doubt noticed that the fixtures diary no longer contains members contact details. This was due to the changes in the GDPR laws. As part of our effort of providing an enhanced range of member information and communication, we are pleased to inform you that the new member’s app is now live and available.

To download the app please visit the App Store (Apple) or Play Store (Android) and search for ClubV1 Members Hub. The app is completely free. If you wish to download the Club app to your laptop or home computer use the web link below, creating a HDIDO registration as above and saving onto your desktop.

Green News

Greens are being cut at 4mm and are slowly improving.  There are still signs of the nematode stress but overall a big improvement over the last couple of weeks.

Day and night temperatures are still not balanced well enough to create the perfect surface given that last week we had ground frost and then temperatures around 20 degrees mid-afternoon.  

In March Fore I wrote “Until we get some consistent temperature and warmth below the surface, we won’t see any great recovery on this.” 

Weather records for 2018 show a consistent soil temperature, (above 10 degrees) from 8th of April with the added advantage of 116mm of rain to compliment this giving much better growing conditions.

April 2019 records are showing a lower soil temperature which only becomes consistent from the 18th and it has been dry since the 7th with a lot less rainfall, a total of 33mm recorded so far.

The stress damage on the surface from last year’s heat and nematodes is recovering and filling but it is these areas which are lying lower in the sward and causing them to be uneven and the healing process is being slowed by the current weather conditions. 

Some more plugging of fusarium scars has been done along with sand and seed to aid in the recovery of these scars.

Greens were fertilised, tined and dressed early in the month.

Tees, Aprons and Fairways have all been fed with controlled release fertiliser this should keep them going through the summer releasing nutrient when the temperature is right.

Tees are being divotted twice weekly. Cutting routines on these areas are now twice a week.

It has been unseasonably dry through April so some areas around trees/woodlands have little grass cover. 

The rough doesn’t need a full cut as yet but we are patch cutting these areas.

Colin completed the tree works towards the end of March and stumpbusters have been in this week to grind out the remaining stumps. These areas will be levelled with soil and seed.

Other jobs being done are replacing path edgings and topping up path material where needed and general bunker maintenance and topping up sand.

The sheep have been moved off site after the arrival of 5 lambs and have done a grand job with the rough management. The team

maintain the pen and keep the supplement feed and water topped up for them while they are here.  It takes around 2 hours for three staff to move the pen.

The range tee area is now open with a marked out teeing area for golfers to use. 

Irrigation system is now charged and in operation and we are using some water where needed, fingers crossed we get the showers over the next couple of days which will help all areas.

Finally, the annual “Divot Party” took place on Thursday 25th April.

30 members (plus Malcolm and Linda!) joined the greenkeepers for 2 hours of exercise. 

I have estimated that 15000 divots were filled, and we will all benefit from this during the summer.  Thank you all!

Not a member of the 100 Club?

The objective of the Alresford Golf Club 100 Club is to raise funds for projects and items requiring capital expenditure that will enhance the Golf Course and/or the Clubhouse.  Such projects would generally be considered ‘extras’ and not necessarily be within the Club budget.

The 100 Club was launched in 1987 to raise funds to augment the Centenary celebrations of the Golf Club in 1990, but at the request of the members, the 100 Club has continued to raise funds for items such as the Information Board and Clock on the 1st tee and the Automatic External Defibrillator in the Entrance Hall.

If you’re not a member of the 100 Club, you can become one for as little as £1 per month.  Shares in the 100 Club are purchased for £1 per month and there is no limit on the number of shares which can be held.  In general, most members have between 1 and 5 shares and pay by monthly direct debit, though it’s also possible to pay quarterly or annually.  Each share is allocated a number which is entered in the monthly draw.  The top prize is £100, with a second prize of £50 and four other prizes of £32.  For more information contact Pat Wallis on 01420 564417 or peterpat51@outlook.com, or call in to the Secretary’s Office.

Mixed Matches

A full list of all our mixed match fixtures is on the board in the foyer. Volunteer lists for subsequent matches will be posted periodically. Any member with a CONGU handicap is welcome to play. It is very much hoped that more members will avail themselves of the opportunity to play mixed golf both at home and on some good away courses. All the matches are played in a very friendly manner and everyone is welcome, no matter what their handicap. An e-mail will be sent to all those chosen to play and the team list will be posted on the board.

A decision has been made that Five Day members may play in the weekend matches if we are unable to field a team from amongst the Seven Day members. There will be a column on the volunteer sheet for Five Day members to sign up. No green fees will be payable. It is hoped that Five Day Members will take advantage of this opportunity to play at the weekend, both at home and away, if required.

Again this year we will be continuing with a smart/casual dress code for our match meals at home and it seems likely that other clubs are also going down this path. There will be no need for gentlemen to wear jacket and tie, unless they so wish. We are also looking at the possibility of serving brunch prior to some of our home matches, instead of having a meal afterwards. Any feedback on this (no pun intended!) would be welcome.
