We hope that you will enjoy your time with us.
In this months edition you can find out about all our competition successes at the club and in the County. AGC is well ahead of the curve in club golf across the county!
Also you can read the latest interview with Chair of Finance- David Crawshaw. There is also plenty to look forward to on the social side, so sign up soon.
As you see in the photo above we recently had an unexpected set of visitors. The balloon was seen hovering north west of Alresford for a while and gradually got closer and lower! Landing on the 18th fairway. AGC wasn’t its intended landing site and that an unfavourable wind and a lack of gas meant that it had to land on a safe level (ish) spot fairly quickly. Luckily no group was playing the 18th at the time or immediately afterwards. A 2 ball playing the 18th after they had packed up the balloon and left the course were none the wiser that their play could have been impeded by a “temporary immoveable obstruction” a few minutes prior to them teeing off. The passengers were a group of 10 Japanese tourists who had that morning flown into Heathrow, and that they thought they were being flown over Windermere not Winchester. They declined our very generous offer of 2 for 1 green fees to play a quick 9 holes, the lame excuse being that they were travelling to Norwich that evening as part of their whistlestop tour of the UK!
Please get in touch if you have any topics you would like covered in future Fore Info editions. Enjoy the read

Making the most of AGC Finance- Interview with our Chair of Finance
This month I took time to get to know David Crawshaw who has been Chair of Finance for the past two years. There has been considerable change in that time, and I was keen to understand what changes have been made.
Editor: So David, what is your background that has enabled you to take on this role?
David: I originally read a degree in agriculture and joined Strutt & Parker in their farm management team. However, I did not find that particularly challenging, so I decided to make a complete change and trained as a Chartered Account. For most of my career I was involved in business and debt restructuring. This included working in Moscow, initially leading a US$ 2 billion debt restructuring of one of the largest Russian banks. The success of the restructuring lead to further debt restructuring projects, so I ended up working in Moscow for four years. I was fortunate to become a partner in one of the ‘Big Four’ accountancy firms.
Many of the corporates that we were restructuring were global, so I spent a lot of time flying. When I retired, I decided to qualify as a pilot, and was fortunate enough to be allowed to fly a Spitfire – every boy’s dream.
Editor: There have been a lot of changes to AGC finance. What have been the challenges for you since taking on the role?
David: It really was a question of implementing a complete upgrade of the entire AGC finance function and delivering best practice. The focus has been on the following:
- Management Accounts – Driving out timely, monthly, financial management accounts, to enable FinCom and ManCom to make decisions based on up to date and accurate information;
- Budgets – Preparing detailed annual budgets for both trading and capital expenditure with each team i.e. Course, P&D and House. What has been important is sitting down with members of the teams and to break down the ‘silo’ mentality so that we work better together as one team;
- Cost Savings – Deliver streamlining of certain key areas and drive out cost savings. The outsourcing of the accounting function has been a good example of this.
- Cash Flow Management – we now have a detailed cash flow model against which we can monitor budget v actual cash flows. This is vital to ensure that we have sufficient funds to meet our ongoing trading liabilities. Our total annual course spend alone is circa £500,000, in addition to which, in the year to 30th September 2025 we have Capital Expenditure of circa £160,000 and Clubhouse Loan repayments of circa £100,000.
- Benchmarking – we do this to ensure that whatever we are doing – whether income or costs – we are in line with our competitors.
Editor: What areas in particular do you enjoy about your role?
David: Sitting down with members of the teams and making sure that they have the funds and support of FinCom to enable them to deliver their goals. We catch up with Simon Justice on a regular basis, as matters concerning the course can change quickly. Whether it is due to the weather or pest control issues, winter projects or the need for additional machinery for whatever reason. Nothing stands still so we need to be able to react quickly to change.
Editor: Members’ subscriptions is always a hot topic. These increased dramatically in 2022-23 by 13% but are now 9% for 2025/26. Will future subscriptions be lower?
David: The level of annual subs is driven out by the budgeting process. Our business is a ‘bottom up’ budgeting i.e. we have a good idea of what our total costs will be for Course, P&D and House based on previous spend. We also have capital expenditure budgets, so we have good visibility on costs of machinery and equipment, as well as generating sufficient cash each year to repay the clubhouse loans. We can also estimate our expected income from golf societies, green fees and catering commission. The ‘gap’ between known income and total costs, allowing for an annual budgeted profit of say £50,000, represents the level of subscriptions and joining fees that we need to achieve to fund AGC.
Importantly, we benchmark our subscriptions against our close competitors, to ensure that that we are in line with them, and we continue to offer value to our members.
It is difficult to speculate in such strange times as these, as to whether subscriptions will be reduced. We shall have to wait and see what the outcome of the present global uncertainty brings.
Editor: Which projects that require funding are you are working on now?
David: FinCom recently agreed the funding for the update of the AGC IT system and also the Intelligent Golf project which is has been implanted.
FinCom is currently appraising the project to install a purpose built toilet between the 6th Tee and 14th fairway. This project represents a substantial capital investment by AGC, with separate toilets for men and women. It will be a self-contained, permanent structure, with mains running water, a dedicated electricity supply and a suitable, substantial waste management solution. Having an electricity supply will allow users to use warm air driers rather than paper towels, provide electric light, fresh air vents and low background heat.
Together with P&D and Course, we are also evaluating a review of the course furniture. This includes tee markers, ball washers, broken tee bins and signage.
The big topic is the water strategy and whilst we have provided initial funding for collection of rainwater, the funding required for a bigger scheme will not be known until AGC has developed its own plan to capture and store water.

May has been a remarkable month for the ladies of Alresford Golf Club, filled with outstanding performances and team successes.

Kelly Travers achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the 2025 Hampshire Ladies County Championship at Blackmoor Golf Club. Her outstanding performance throughout the tournament culminated in a victory against Aimee Paterson of North Hants in the final.

Additionally, Gill Freemantle delivered an impressive performance, by being Runner-Up in the Challenge Bowl during the same championship week. More county week details below in Sandra’s report below.
The Annotate Team secured a victory over Basingstoke and will advance to play Sherfield Oaks in the next round.
In the Daily Mail Foursomes, Sarah Staines and Heather Williams triumphed over Corhampton, and are scheduled to play against Burley in the forthcoming round.
Finally the Scratch Team commenced the season with a strong performance, achieving a commendable victory against local rivals Hockley.
May 2025 has been a month of significant achievements and active participation for the Ladies Section, these individual and team successes, have set a positive tone for the upcoming months.

Hampshire Ladies Golf
The highlight for Hampshire Ladies Golf during May was County Championship Week held at Blackmoor. As you know we had 28 ladies and apart from the Quinn Seniors Scratch Bowl we were represented in each division, the weather was good for the whole week. In the Championship Kelly Travers, Rosie Rooney, and Jenny Myers qualified for the matchplay, unfortunately Jenny and Rosie had to play each other and the winner faced Kelly who went on and became County Champion, Kelly also won the 36 holes Championship what an achievement! In the Challenge Bowl, Allena Doley, Jane Macrae, Gill Freemantle and Dorothy Shore qualified for the matchplay and Gill lost out in the final. Congratulations to everyone who took part.
Linda Wager and Jacqui Sanger won at the Army in the Knight Cup great result and will play Stoneham in the next round.
Hayling Trophy semi final Linda Wager and her valiant team sadly lost against Rowlands Castle at Shanklin and Sandown, final Rowlands Castle v Shanklin and Sandown, great campaign!
Many congratulations to Kelly Travers, and Jenny Myers who have been selected for the first team squad and will be playing at Mill Hill GC in County Match Week.
If you would like to support Hampshire in County Match Week it is Mill Hill GC 22nd– 25th June, all supporters very welcome.
Don’t forget Ladies to look at the county board and website to ensure you don’t miss out in playing in county events as they are filling up fast.
Please email me if you have any queries about anything to do with the county and if I don’t know I will find out who does!

Competitions and Handicap Committee Report
Club Championship
28th & 29th June 2025
Registration for entry closed on 8th June
As anticipated this year demand for places is high.
The allocation of places will be made shortly after the closing date of 8th June and players will be notified that they have been allocated a place in the Club Championship 2025. Any player not securing a place after this process has been completed will be allocated a place on the waiting list and will be notified accordingly. The allocation of both initial places and places from the waiting list are detailed in the Terms of Club Championship document available on the Website.
Preliminary playing groups and tee-times will be made week commencing 16th June and once this process has been completed, this will appear live on the Members Hub. Final tee times published week commencing 23rd June (this is after the final handicap qualifying event prior to Championship weekend) and competitors will then receive an email of their start time for Round 1. You will not have to book tee times on for either Saturday 28th or Sunday 29th.
On Saturday 28th, once the last group has handed in their cards, the competition organisers will compile the results for Round 1 and this will determine the playing groups on Sunday 29th. The order of play for Round 2 will be in descending order of Round 1 gross scores. This start sheet will be emailed to all competitors on Saturday evening. It will be the responsibility of each player to know their start time on Sunday morning. The first start time for both Round 1 and Round 2 will likely be around 08:00am.
On each day of the competition, players should register and collect their score cards from the Scorer’s Table which will be located in the Clubhouse. Within 5 minutes of completion of each round, players should return their cards to the Scorer’s Table and ensure they have agreed with the scorer that the card is correct before leaving.
Given the format of the Championship, players who fail to participate in the 2nd round will cause significant disruption to the running of the competition. Consequently, and based on our experience of other 2-day competitions, we are making it a condition of competition that unless a player notifies the Committee on return of their Round 1 scorecard that they will be unable to play in Round 2, he/she will be subject to penalties (at the Committee’s discretion).
Entry to the Championship sweepstake (both men and ladies) will be available in the Pro’s Shop. An optional 2’s Club will also be running.
To allow for the preparation for the Club Championship, General Play rounds will be suspended from Monday 23rd June to Sunday 29th June 2025. If you are playing at an “away” course during this time, please refrain from submitting a General Play score.
If you are not playing in the Club Championship the C&H Committee would very much welcome volunteers (ball spotting and marshals etc.), if you are able to give a few hours of your time over the weekend, please contact me on handicaps@alresfordgolf.co.uk.
Many thanks.

A Look at the Rules
Greens
Course and Water Management Update
As we navigate one of the driest springs in recent memory, water usage remains a key priority. As of 21st May, 2,600 cubic meters have been drawn from the borehole, with 35 cubic meters consumed daily across Greens, Tees, and Aprons. Additionally, 40 cubic meters of mains water have been used to test the new pipework in the barn. Hand watering has been carried out in all of these areas, utilizing wetting agent pellets to maximize hydration and ensure effective water retention. The anticipated rainfall in late May should help rejuvenate the Fairways, and a timely wetting agent application will be deployed to optimize moisture absorption.
Recovery and Maintenance Efforts
The past few months have been particularly challenging, with the team working diligently to restore winter-worn areas, though, unfortunately, with limited success. However, Greens have shown significant improvement in May, with drill and fill holes blending in well. Annual meadow grass is seeding heavily, resulting in visible white seedheads within the sward, which can slow ball roll. To mitigate this, growth regulators are being applied to manage seedhead development, and ongoing nutrition treatments continue to ensure the highest possible surface quality.
Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) Assessment and Findings
During a recent visit from the STRI, detailed assessments were conducted on Greens 7, 10, and 13, followed by a broader course review. The results were highly positive, with nutrient levels, surface smoothness, and trueness all meeting optimal guidelines. Furthermore, Steve Gingell from the STRI reported that our greens had delivered the best results of any site visited this year, offering outstanding feedback for the greenkeeping team.
Range Grass Tee and Club Championship Preparations
Despite being closed the range grass tee has suffered from significant wear. It is now open for play, and members are kindly asked to maintain its condition by properly disposing of broken tee pegs and avoiding renovated areas covered with protective sheeting.
Preparations for the Club Championship will soon commence, with the team focusing on enhancing presentation and ensuring nutrition and moisture levels remain optimal across all key areas. Light aeration will be carried out to break down organic matter and improve oxygen flow, followed by light sand dressings to refine the profile. The objective is to monitor and elevate green speeds in the lead-up to the championship, aiming for speeds of approximately 10 feet during a managed dry period.
In the final build-up week, each member of the greenkeeping team will be assigned specific tasks to ensure optimal course conditions. Fairway maintenance will take place in the afternoons, ensuring a dry cut without excess clippings. The mornings will focus on cutting and rolling greens, bunker maintenance, tee mowing, divot filling, and additional refinements to enhance the overall playing experience.
Simon and his team look forward to delivering the best possible playing conditions, weather permitting, for this year’s championship.

iG: INTELLIGENT GOLF UPDATE
We are now over a month into the transition from Club V1 to IG. I hope that members are starting to see the benefits from the move. We are still liaising with IG Support on a regular basis as we come across problems or issues that we are unfamiliar with – please bear with us as we are learning as well! Thank you for your patience. We have requested some changes to font, colours and sizes which should hopefully happen soon and make the screens more visible.

IG and England Golf updating
This is still work in progress sometimes (This Sunday, it updated mid-evening but Saturday not until midnight). You may see your own score, but handicap will not update until after midnight. General Play
General Play scores may now only be returned via the England Golf App and not accepted through IG. This took effect from Friday 23rd May.
If you have not downloaded the My England Golf App, you will need to do so using your CDH no. as your membership number.
Other-
However, we are aware of a few continuing teething issues. If you come across anything that does not appear to work as you expect – please let us know so we can investigate and do our best to solve.
COURSE ETIQUETTE – CLARIFICATION
Several bye-laws have been queried in recent weeks. Please see below for clarification of these;
- The practicing or playing of multiple shots on or from tees, greens, fairways and bunkers on the course is strictly prohibited. One ball person when playing on the course.
- Members’ dogs are permitted on patio area but not in the clubhouse or on the course at any time. The only exception to this being guide / assistance dogs.
- ‘Cutting in’, which causes interference to another match, is strictly forbidden anywhere on the course. i.e you may not ‘jump around the course playing holes out of sequence and delaying any groups behind.
‘Pace of Play’ – probably one of the most contentious issues at any golf club. Every golfer does not consider themselves deliberately slow. However ‘Pace of Play’ is not always about the time. I would ask all members to consider how they are effecting other members on the course. It is the groups responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole or it is delaying the group behind i.e. it is apparent that they are playing quicker due either to ability or numbers, YOU MUST invite the group behind to play through irrespective of the number of players in the group. If your group is invited to ‘play thru’ you should do so, as by not doing so you in turn may be delaying the group behind you!
Allowing a group to play thru is not a slur on your golfing ability or character, but you will thanked and well regarded for identifying the need to and calling players through quickly and without delay.
Please respect the Course Marshall at all times – ignoring or arguing with the Course Marshall is not acceptable and any member doing so will be subject to the club disciplinary process.
FOR CLARIFICATION – the guide timings on the scorecard are not the times you are permitted to take. They are there for guidance only. So if the group behind is being held up, they MUST be invited through irrespective of whether you are playing to the time according to the card.
REMINDER – DRESS CODE
The hot sunny weather always highlights any dress code miscreants and the last thing anybody wants when they are hot and bothered is to be told about their attire on the course. However please bear in mind the following;
- Baseball hats should be worn the correct way around (and not in the clubhouse).
- Shorts should be tailored and not football shorts, cargo shorts with outside pockets or three-quarter length.
- Shirts should have a collar (men) and please tuck shirts in wherever possible.
SUB-COMMITTEE VACANCY
The Planning & Development Committee is currently seeking a replacement member.
The sub-committee is currently responsible for the management systems for major projects in liaison with other club sub-committees, implementing any additional strategies to address the recruitment of new members and golf development, reviewing of the club rules and bye-laws, maintenance of the Club’s website, social media and IT infrastructure.
If you have any skills which you think may be useful or helpful, please contact the General Manager or David Fox (Chair of P&D) to discuss further.
COURTESIES & RECIPROCALS
Are you aware that as part of your membership at Alresford you can enjoy free or discounted golf at many other courses in the south of England and further afield?
Courtesies: these are published on the main noticeboard and coincide with times when we are hosting major events/matches that restrict access to our course for our members. Local clubs which we have partnerships with, offer our members a tee time that you can bid for. These are balloted and allocated. These include North Hants , Hayling, Stoneham, Army and Farnham – many of these opportunities end up not taken ??
Reciprocals :1 x 4ball per week is available Monday-Friday (bookable 7 days in advance) at a selected list of local clubs; Lee-on-Solent, Waterlooville, Bramley, High Post, Salisbury & South Wilts, Chobham, Tidworth and Rowlands Castle. There is no charge payable. All requests made through our office.
NEW – As part of our reciprocal programme we also can offer our members discounted green fees rates of up to 30% at EL PARAISO GOLF CLUB and LOS ARQUEROS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB both near to Marbella /Estepona on the Costa del Sol, Spain. So if you are travelling to sunny Spain, you can enjoy preferential golf rates (contact AGC office for details).

Congratulations to all teams and players who were part of the inaugural Team Golf KO Cup, on the 8th May, as part of our 25th Year celebrations.
In addition to our regular 12 teams, we were delighted to be joined by ‘The Greenies’ (Simon Justice & Mark Vallence), ‘The Club’ (Malcolm Scott & Graham Marshallsay) and The Kitchen (Trevor Pearce & Max Sly) who also brought their non-playing but working Captain Ben O’Shaunessey.
After the usual 9 holes of better ball but with both scores to count on Par 3s, the draw was made in the clubhouse by Jan White, to see who would play who in Stableford Matchplay. First round losers went into the TG Plate and the winners of Round 1 went into the main TG Cup.
Some close finishes in all matches brought us (reasonably quickly!) to the Final of the TG Plate where the Rookie Rebels were too strong for Jabba The Putt and in the main event The Kitchen, skippered from behind the bar by a very enthusiastic Ben, managed to beat Polly’s Pals to take home the first of the three TG trophies this year.
A big thank you to all that played and supported the event.
Further details on the two other 25th Year Celebrations will be circulated via Team Golf Captains soon BUT SAVE THE DATES – Thursday 17th July & Saturday 16th August
