Winners in the 100 Club
Welcome to those new members who have joined the club for the start of the year;
Len & Joanna Bullock, Richard Fitzpatrick, Reinard Schmulian, Brian Tracy and Paul Doran (7 day), Mark Cole, George Mitchell, Joe Monaghan, Neil Oughton, Andrew Hardwick, Chris Moody (5 day), Sam Bishop, Liam Markwick, Kenny Tyce (Intermediate), Joseph William, Finlay Paterson, Nina Rai and Zachiary Wyatt (Junior), and Sarah Lavers ( Academy) .
We hope that you all have a long and enjoyable time at the club. Even though we lose some members each year for personal reasons, it’s great to see we attract new members to fill their places. The AGC membership offer is very competitive in the region.
This month we hear about three special members who over many years went over and above in their support for our club. These three honorary members were voted in at the recent AGM. Well done, you all deserve our thanks.
This edition sees the first contribution from our new Club Captain/Ladies Captain/Vets Captain and Juniors Captain, Gary Mugford, Polly Church, Andy Gagen and Tobias Cobb. Well done for stepping up to this big voluntary responsibility in serving our club. Good luck. There are large photos of them so that you can spot them in the clubhouse and wish them well too.
A hot topic around the club at the moment is the new loyalty scheme announced by Ben. Read full details of how you can earn and spend loyalty points in the General Manager section this month. Please support the bar and catering of ‘our club’ as it helps our club coffers and your wellbeing. Ben @the kitchen is really trying to better meet our needs in 2025. Please give any feedback at our regular User Forums (advertised by David Maskery in his updates) or by email to David. Only with your feedback, both positive and negative, can Ben know what suits us best.
The Greens Section is again filled with details of our winter projects. Finally check who won the 100 club draw this month. For new members its a must to invest and help the club whilst being in a prize draw with hundreds of pounds to win each month.

Despite the bad weather conditions there were two holes in one in December. Congratulations to Mel Gates for acing the 10th and Nigel Slater on the 6th. I unfortunately missed out on the drinks again, finishing my round just as Mel exited the clubhouse…
Congratulations to Jane Andrews who won the Charity Car Parking Space in the recent Draw, helping raise £870 for the Captains Charities. Thanks to all members that participated in the draw.
Finally you can always access this Newsletter directly from the AGC website/About section. It is usually there from the 3rd of every month. So you don’t need to hunt David Maskery’s email each month!! No excuse for not reading it…
All that is left is to wish all readers a Happy, Healthy and successful golfing 2025.

THANK YOU FROM ALTON CARDIAC-REHAB
Dear David
This is a delayed but very sincere thank you to last year’s captains and to all the generous members of Alresford Golf Club for the unexpectedly enormous donation to Alton Cardiac Rehab. Alton Cardiac Rehab has been around since 1976 and a Charity since 1992. We began as an exercise facility for people recovering from cardiac events – mainly heart attacks and heart surgery. Over the years we have expanded to embrace “primary prevention” – that is getting to the individual before they develop any heart problem. We are now increasing our range by including other folk who need to exercise to treat or prevent different health problems including cancer management, long Covid recovery and frailty prevention. We receive no NHS funding and have to raise more than £700 a day to pay for our facility and for the highly qualified professionals who run our specialised programmes. The huge donation from AGC has been a real boost for us.
Can I also take this opportunity to mention that Alton Cardiac Rehab has an active Golf Society. We play nine matches a year at a variety of courses around the county (and sometimes outside Hampshire). Membership is a ruinous £15 per annum. Do join us – just email our Secretary Teresa Frost at: teresagolf@btinternet.com
With grateful thanks
Hugh Bethell and all at Alton Cardiac Rehab
Our New Honorary Members: their contribution to AGC
At our recent Club AGM we voted in three new honorary members. According to our constitution, an honorary member is a member who has contributed to the club in at least 3 of the following ways: been club captain, a sub committee chair, active committee member, officer of the club, led a project team for a major club project, land or lenders trustee, club organiser such as match captain, social organiser, contributed to the day to day running of the club and clubhouse, wider golfing activities such as a supporter of Hampshire or National golf, involved as a player or administrator in County, National or International golf organizations such as PGA or has brought wide credit to the club, been a member for a substantial number of years.
A Candidates list is drawn up by our General Manager and reviewed by a sub committee of MANCOM, then a candidate then must get a full MANCOM sign off, before going to a vote at the AGM. (the full AGC Honorary Membership process is available to view by all members on our website).
We welcome our 3 new Honorary Members – Keith Monkhouse, Malcolm Scott and John White. I caught up with them and found out about their personal contributions to AGC.
Keith Monkhouse
Keith Monkhouse joined the club in 1994 and has been (to name a few) Club Captain, Land Trustee, Treasurer and Chair of Match and Handicaps. He was instrumental as a member of a small sub group in introducing our new club management structure which works so well for us today.
When Keith was Treasurer, the club was still moving from 9 holes to 18 and the accounts were still spreadsheet based which had been appropriate for the associated 9- hole modest accounts but not so for the larger accounts associated with 18 hole membership. He sought advice from our accountants and the club agreed to move to their recommended system which quickly exposed some difficulties. One in particular was the payment of VAT (complicated in our case as we do not pay VAT on subs) which involved him spending nearly a week with HMRC in a back room of the club and a subsequent payment to correct unpaid tax – affordable, just. If it wasn’t for Keith’s tenacity we may well have had a big HMRC fine to pay.
Malcolm Scott
Malcolm Scott arrived at AGC in the fall of 1980 and had a wonderful relationship with the club as Head Professional for 40 years. He contributed in several key areas to the development of the club.
Firstly, after the loss of land due to the building of the A31 by-pass, Malcolm steered the redesigned 9 holes to a 12 hole layout in 1988 and finally a full 18 holes in 1993.
Secondly, he made further improvements to our practice/training facilities, installing covered bays, developing the wedge range, academy course and more recently the Professional’s teaching studio. We now have one of the best practice facilities in Hampshire.
Thirdly, he spent 25 years as a County Junior Coach for both girls and boys.
Soon after retiring from his Head Professional’s position in 2020 he was asked to become President of the Hampshire Professional Golfers Association and then made an Honorary Member of The National PGA.
Today Malcolm continues to serve the club in a voluntary way, especially this year tending our many flowerbeds.
John White

John White joined the Club in 1965 and served (to name a few) as Club Captain, Chair of Social and Chair of Greens. Of course to m embers today he is best known for initiating and hosting Team Golf, now reaching its 25th year. Team Golf has helped many new members integrate and find friendships across the membership sections. John was involved in the tricky negotiations to extend the club to 18 holes with the addition of a barley field as extra land (holes 4-6) in 1989. He remembers how the tees were postage stamp size and his predecessor as chair of greens was a farmer “who knew how to grow grass”. John has always been a very competitive golfer and won 15 board competitions and had 3 hole in ones.
From the Club Captain

And so the year begins……
Thank you to Richard Lane for this opportunity and to the Interim Chairman, Simon Freemantle and the Past Captains from all sections that have given me help, guidance and support to get to this point. I am sure your work is not done yet – I will still call on your advice and guidance for sure.
I truly meant what I said in my speech at the AGM, this is an honour of which I am very proud to be taking on. I will give it all I can, you can be assured of that.
Welcome to Graham Marshallsay in his new role of Chairman, I wish him good luck in this and sure he will help keep this club driving forward.
Thank you to Les Thorne, Alicia Hardy and the many volunteers that put on a great day at the Captains’ Drive In. A day I lost quite a few nights sleep over, but Les was much more gentle with me than I expected…thankfully . It was a special day with many of my family able to see why they may not see much of me next year. Well done and good luck to my fellow Captains in Polly, Andy and Tobias. Thank you to all that attended the event and to your contributions to the great start to both our charities – £692 is a very much appreciated.
My first event was a very kind invite from Andy Gagen and the Vets to join their Xmas 4-Club Scramble on the 4th December – Yes, our 4-ball won it, so a victorious start to mine and Andy’s year.
Welcome to Charlie McLaughlin, my vice-captain. We are busy finalising all the match plans and dates and ClubV1 entries, so please once the 2025 Men’s Friendlies are released on ClubV1, review the dates and mark your availability and help support Charlie in his fixtures. I used 70+ players in 2024 and sure Charlie aim’s to do the same.
Interviewing potential new members has started already, we will keep you up-dated on this subject in the coming months.
I was extremely impressed in the successes seen in 2024 in the Men’s, Ladies, Vets and Juniors – some great Team results as well as some great Individual and Pairs results.
To Gareth Rees and Mark Wood’s team with the Juniors, to my Team Managers in Men’s Friendlies – Charlie McLaughlin (Vice Captain), Scratch League and the Men’s U40’s – Grant Thorne, Kindred Cup – Dave Seager, County 7s – Ashley Wilmott, Gales Hockley – Trevor Pearce, Annodata – James Banks, Henry Glanfield – Beckford Bowl, the Mixed Matches – Steve and Kim Johnson and to all the teams in our strong Ladies and Vets sections.
Please support your teams and represent Alresford Golf Club proudly and respectfully.
Here’s to a great 2025 and happy golfing!!

The winter Pro’s Stableford competition schedule is as follows:
Saturday 04 January – Pro Stableford (M&L)
Sunday 05 January – Pro Stableford (M&L)
Saturday 11 January – Pro Stableford (M&L)
Sunday 12 January – Pro Stableford (M&L)
Saturday 18 January – Pro Stableford (M&L)

Saturday 25 January – Pro Stableford (M&L)
Sunday 26 January – Pro Stableford (M&L)
These competitions have a £3 entry fee for 18 holes or £2 for 9 hole competitions. The mixed and men’s competitions also have an optional 2’s club (cost £2 for 18 holes, £1 for 9 holes). Each of the above are Pro’s Stableford competitions and any winnings will be credited to Pro Shop accounts.
As a reminder, Greenstaff will update the App of a daily basis as to whether the courses is qualifying or not, and the course signage will be visible on the first tee, clearly stating whether the course is deemed qualifying or not. The decision taken at the time of posting the course status if final and will NOT change after that time.
The C&H Committee are hoping to run a limited number of 9 hole qualifying competitions in January and February, but these will be very much dependent on the weather and course conditions. Details of these will be posted in “Members’ Update”.
Annual Review of Handicaps
The Competitions and Handicap Committee is required to annually review the Handicap Index of all players to determine whether their Handicap Index is reflective of their demonstrated ability, and their current scoring pattern is consistent with their expected scoring pattern. A report is produced to help identify such players and those players will be reviewed by the Committee at their meeting on Friday 13th January. Any member who may receive an adjustment will be contacted by the Committee.
Winter Knockouts
The Mixed Winter Foursomes and Men’s Lombard 4BBB league matches will have concluded on 31st December. The draw for the top 16 in each competition will be made as soon as possible with a view to matches commencing the second week of January. Each side has equal responsibility to arrange their matches. In the event of a League match not being played or completed on time, the C&H Committee may, at their discretion, award points to the team not at fault.

Question
Greens
As the year draws to a close it seems an opportune time to pass thanks to the green staff for their efforts throughout 2024. The weather this year certainly threw some challenges their way, with several very wet months and far greater than average rainfall. Perhaps the most memorable of these wet days was the morning of the Alresford Pro-Am which saw downpours of biblical proportions, and we were very grateful to the team for pulling out all the stops to make sure the event could go ahead.
2024 has seen the green staff expand, welcoming a new apprentice Finlay Justice who is flourishing in his role. Mick Goodyear has recently undergone a hip replacement operation, and we wish him well as he continues his recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the course very soon!
Many of you will have seen that tree surgeon Colin Luff was at the course for two days prior to Christmas as part of our ongoing woodland management programme. Colin has removed trees that were suffering from Ash Dieback as well as others that were either poor specimens and detracting from the course or were crowded too close to others.
The resulting log piles and stumps will be removed soon and the areas tidied up and returned to play.
On top of their regular tasks, the staff will begin work on the winter projects in January, levelling and increasing the teeing area available on the 2nd hole and constructing two new fairway bunkers on the 8th
The work on the 17th fairway bunkers is almost complete and just awaiting delivery of the fescue turf which will be laid as soon as it arrives. These bunkers are being constructed in what we hope will become recognisable as an ‘Alresford’ bunker, with more shaping than previously and with wispy eyebrows of fescue grass.
New marker post have been placed in between some of the green-side bunkers and the greens as a reminder not to take trolleys and buggies in between them. These areas are prone to damage all year round, as well as being particularly slippery during the wetter months of winter. Please continue to avoid these areas at all times of the year.

FAQ’s
1: How will I know when my points expire?
You will receive a text message 14-16 days out from expiry reminding you to use your points
2: What about my current points?
These will expire in 3 months from the 6th January 2025 (6th April 2025)
3: How do I know how many points will be awarded for each Social Event?
This will be detailed on the poster advertising each event. Points will be tiered on a function by function basis. A quiz, race night or a disco will be between 1point (attending but not eating) and 5 points (attending & eating) and a formal function such as Club Dinner, New Years Eve and/or similar will be 20 points. Points are awarded upon attendance and not for simply signing up. Points will be awarded whether the price of the ticket is taken from gold cards or over the bar.
4: Are points awarded based on the menu price or the members price (post discount)?
Points are awarded based on pounds spent so a round of drinks that costs £10 is actually £8 after your 20% discount and so will earn you 8 points.
We are keen to encourage more and more members to utilise the Bar & Catering facilities both pre and post round and also at the numerous social functions throughout the year and we hope these improvements will do this?

There is a tee reservation between 11.00-11.45am – members wishing to take part should meet at the starters hut from approx. 10.45am for allocation of groups. As per the times highlighted for the Ladies and Vets Sections, we politely ask members to show courtesy to those who wish to play in this ‘roll up’ at this time. If you do not wish to play with this group please choose another time if possible. If there continues to be a limited use of this time, then the Captains Committee will review the tee allocation.
ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS 2025
You should have received your annual subscription invoice via email. If you haven’t, please check your inbox or junk mail or contact the Office.
Payments can be made over the telephone with credit/debit card or even better via BACS transfer (details on the bill).
You may not play after 1st January if you do not intend to renew your membership.
We do offer an Advanced Payment Scheme for your 2026 subscriptions. You choose how much you wish to pay against your bill for 2026 and your account is credited. Speak to the Office if you would like a Standing Order form.
NEW YEARS RESOLUTION – PLAY WITH MORE OTHER MEMBERS?
We all have our regular groups of players we try to play with each week. However part of the benefit of being a member of a club is the opportunity to meet and play with other people. Some members have smaller playing circles than others and especially if you are a new member it might be that you are unsure as to how to get a game. Rather than play alone, try the following;
Making Contact and Playing a Friendly Game
We have initiated a “Make Contact” system for golfers, a system aimed at introducing newer golfers to partners and to established players who can mark cards. The ‘Make Contact’ sheet is posted in each of the changing rooms.
If you continue to have difficulty finding a game, please do not be embarrassed, speak to the Office and we will find accommodating members for you. Guaranteed! Everybody has been in that situation before.
You may also book a tee time and join an existing group. However, it is courteous to email the lead name of that group to ask/advise that you have joined them. There may be occasions when they are playing a match and adding another individual at that time will not be appropriate.
Social Golf
There are plenty of opportunities to meet other players without making prior arrangements. There is a Club Roll-Up on Wednesdays at 11.00 am at which partners are randomly chosen. The Vets and Ladies Sections also run Roll-Ups, these are all ideal for meeting new playing partners.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Due to the unevenness of the sloped gravel path from the patio to the 9th green, Buggies including single seater buggies should not ascend back towards the patio/clubhouse using this slope until further notice
Please drive around in front of the 18th green, keeping at least 5m away from the approach area.
Thank you
Winter is here- Be Safe on the Golf Course
Rain/Mud/Frost/Ice = slippery golf course, especially grass banks, wooden sleepers and any untreated areas.
PLEASE TAKE CARE AND KEEP TO THE PATHS WHEREVER POSSIBLE
DO NOT WALK ON SLOPES
DO NOT TAKE YOUR TROLLEYS ACROSS THE SIDES OF SLOPES AND BANKS
PLEASE ADHERE TO ANY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SIGNAGE ON THE COURSE
KEEP BUGGIES AND TROLLIES AWAY FROM THE EDGES OF GREENS AND TEES
If roads are icy in the morning on your way to the club, it is fair to assume that the car park and the paths around the club will be icy too! We do our best to grit and salt these areas but please take care.
PLEASE HELP US – please CLEAN YOUR GOLF SHOES before entering the clubhouse whether you are accessing the changing rooms, office or bar from the patio or main entrance doors.
Similarly, the shoe cleaner can be used rather than just banging your golf shoes to remove grass and mud in the car park.
Wet weather golf attire should not be worn in any of the seated areas in the clubhouse – please change out of your waterproofs or wet golf wear.
Help us keep YOUR clubhouse clean and tidy

BURNS NIGHT: Saturday 18th January 7.00pm for 7.30pm
As you start to think of what you’re going to do after New Year and are looking for something to brighten up those dreary January nights, what better than an evening out with friends to enjoy a good hearty meal at one of the highlights of the social scene.
Come and enjoy our 31st Burns Supper – a uniquely Scottish experience in good company featuring whisky, haggis, neeps (mashed swede) and tatties, and a light-hearted appreciation of Scotland’s Bard, and of course, the skirl of the bagpipes
This is always a popular event in the social calendar so look out for the sign-up notice that will be posted on the Social Noticeboard on Christmas Eve. The main speakers have been confirmed and will be featured on the notice board. The menu will also be posted, so if you have any specific dietary requirements then please remember to contact the kitchen staff when you sign-up
The cost for the evening will be £39 per person which includes a three-course meal with coffee and a glass of your favourite tipple for the toasts after the meal. A vegetarian option will be available for the starter and the main. The price increase is reflective of the current rising costs of food and drink over which we have little control.
Members and guests are all welcome. Dress code is Black Tie or Highland Dress.
Contact George Clelland for further information.

Best wishes to all and for a successful 25th year of TG in 2025!
