Last month I was able to share with Members our outline timetable for clubhouse development. Hardly expecting anyone to commit this to memory, here is a brief reprise:
July: Architect working on all aspects of feasibility and planning, refining initial designs, and commissioning necessary survey work
August: Management Committee then giving their support to a ‘preferred set of proposals’ for visual presentation to Members, in the form of physical representation in the clubhouse, and digital format to members online
September: Finalisation of design proposals and costings, for sharing with Members
October: If all goes to plan – approved design, costing and funding proposals to be presented to Members at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), for final approval and sign-off
I am pleased to advise that we remain on track with this timetable, with the July actions all but completed. That said it is likely to be towards the end of August before we have our visuals completed and ready for presentation to the membership.
Thank you for your patience during what must seem a protracted period of ‘behind the scenes’, but we do want to meet / exceed your design aspirations, and through the most cost-effective means.
There will be further communication once the initial visuals become available for viewing.

From the Club Captain
It is always nice when you receive a compliment, it’s even better when you receive them on a very regular basis. I am of course not talking about personal compliments but those I receive as the Club Captain about the quality of our course, the Hampshire Past Captain’s match against Essex, our own Mixed Open, the mens match versus Cowdray Park…………….. the list goes on. The credit of course goes to Simon Justice and his team who continue to take pride in their work, their attention to detail is second to none. The Greens Maintenance programme starts shortly to ensure that our greens will be in good condition for play in the autumn and winter months, please be patient whilst the team carries out this important work.
The Mens Invitation is due to take place on 18th August, if you are a man and haven’t entered yet please do so and bring along a friend to show off what our club has to offer.
As Club Captain I am able to introduce a new competition or match for one year only. I chose a 3 clubs and a putter format that took place on Friday 26th July. The competition I decided would be free to enter and I provided a few prizes, and 56 members entered. Chris Pullinger was keen to put on some food and entertainment and our Immediate Past Vets Captain – Chris Thompson – and his friend Chris Nash provided the entertainment in the form of an Acoustic Guitar Duo – Nash & Thompson. Needless to say the meal was great, and the talented guitar duo put on a very polished performance of some well known classical and jazz standards.
Despite having just 3 clubs there were some very very good scores, there were 3 x 38 points, 3 x 40 points but with an amazing 41 points Steve Morgan won the mens competition on countback from Steve Oldham. The ladies competition was won by Lyn Jones with 35 points from Sarah Staines on 32 points. Despite being free to enter £181 was added to the charity pot by way of generous donations.
You will have noticed that the recent work to rebuild the eastern wall of Curly’s Barn is now complete and it looks good. Some of you have commented on why the work needed to be done.
The timber frame holding up the wall was rotten and the bricks were just infill, there was very little supporting the roof timbers. The new wall is now fit for purpose and will last another 100+ years.
The Hampshire County U14 Boys championships were held on 23rd July and I was asked to present the prizes. It was fantastic to see these talented youngsters as young as 11 years old playing competitive golf. On examining the trophy I found that Justin Rose won it 3 times, the first would have been when aged 11.
We have teams entering the invites from other clubs in the area and I’m very pleased to report that our team of George Clelland and Brian Wright in the Liphook Captain and Past Captain challenge secured a very creditable 2nd place and the Waterlooville Cup team of myself, Mary Rook, Paul Wager, Tony Stanton and Trevor Pearce also won 2nd prize – well done everyone!
Captains Day on Sunday 15th September will be open to all club members – 5 & 7 day male and female – plus HPLS members. We are One Club. The format will be an individual stableford and also a team competition with the best 3 scores from 4 to count. HPLS members will not be eligible to win the overall Individual prize as it is a board competition, but there is still the team, and individual men and ladies prizes to compete for. The event is free to enter and I will be providing the prizes and refreshments in the half-way house. If there is sufficient interest there will be shotgun starts AM and PM with food on offer after you finish your rounds and return to the clubhouse. Keep an eye open for the information board in the foyer and get the date in your diary now.
This month’s Found Ball is marked with the number “2455” so I hope the owner will hop into the Secretary’s office to collect it.
I include a second ball this month Oh Oliver! Santa won’t be happy with you for losing this ball!
So the glorious weather has returned – July has been amazing starting with the Club Championships on the last weekend of June – two fabulous days of golf culminating in a great finish – lots of people on the patio watching and a superb barbecue as well.

This month we welcome Alicia Hardy joining us as a full member – we do hope you enjoy your time at Alresford. Sadly we say goodbye to Camilla Mortimer whose time with us has been only too short – we wish you well Camilla and hope to see you back here some day soon.
The Ladies Invitation took place in glorious weather with 22 guests joining us from from 16 different clubs. Congratulations to Di Peisley and her partner Bea Sword from Hankley Common for their win. Bea is 88 and still playing golf three times a week – what a recommendation to us all!
Of course the most special day for me during July was Ladies Captains Day – what a brilliant day for me to remember in years to come.
Of course the weather helped – once again glorious – 73 ladies played golf – another 6 joined me for lunch together with Graham Marshallsay, George Clelland and Ray Panter who all helped me on the day.
Thank you also to my daughter Isabelle who was my ‘right-hand man’ all day.
If you hadn’t heard, I was not that popular when I told the Ladies they would be playing without their putters!
Indeed half way round the comments were pretty damning, however the top three ladies came in with 35pts so I’m not sure what everyone was complaining about?
We also welcomed a temporary new member to the Ladies Section…..
Thank you all for rising to the challenge so magnificently and thank you once again for the lovely cards, messages and gifts that I received.
Outside the club one of our teams came second in the Romsey Team Tournament – see photo, and Gunnel Berry and Di Peisley came 2nd and 5th respectively in the Hampshire Ladies Seniors Championship at Stoneham – well done both of you on such a difficult course.
I also want to congratulate the Stoneham Cup ladies under the captaincy of Lesley Martin. The last two matches of this years campaign were against Weybrook Park and we had fantastic wins home and away.
It was wonderful to see a sea of pink ladies walking down the 17th supporting the team. We came second in our group this year, beaten only by a very on form Barton on Sea so well done ladies – a great result and definitely something to build on next year.
Our Junior Girls are doing really well – in the Douglas Cup at Lee on the Solent Amelia Aikenhead came 2nd with 39 points and Rosie Rooney 3rd with 36 points. Jasmine Jury had 2nd best net in her first 26 hole competition. Jenny Myers has qualified for the England Golf Abraham Trophy as the Hampshire Area Winner. Jenny will play in the 18-hole national final at Gerrards Cross Golf Club on Monday 5 August. This competition is to find England’s most improved girl golfer, on the basis of their handicap reduction during the past year. Good Luck from us all Jenny!

Match Committee Report
This month’s report is very much a series of reminders of competitions and events which will be taking place over the next couple of months.
Men’s Invitation – Sunday 18th August
There were 25 entries on the list this week and we can accommodate more. We play 12 holes of American Greensomes in the morning before the main event of 18 holes 4BBB in the afternoon. The cost is £68 per pair for coffee and bacon roll on arrival, lunch and 2-course meal in the evening. Guests who have society handicaps or handicaps which don’t have competitive status are welcome and would compete for a separate prize fund.
Millennium Quaich – Sunday 1st September
This is a 4BBB competition where the pairs can be 2 men, 2 ladies or mixed. Tee-off will be a shotgun start at 08:30. You may specify if you wish to play with a particular pair. The entry list will close on Sunday 25th August and the draw for playing groups, and tees will be posted and emailed to competitors. Standard entry fee of £3 per person.
Mixed Invitation – Sunday 8th September
The entry sheet for the Mixed Invitation is on the noticeboard in the Entrance Hall. Only a few entries so far, but I’m sure many more of you will add your names to the list. The format is a round of 4BBB followed by dinner. The cost is £48 per pair to include a 2-course meal in the evening. We’ve had many complements this summer on the condition of our course compared with others in the area. This invitation event is a great way to show off our beautiful course and our hospitality to your friends or playing partners in a mixed match or open event.
Entry Criteria for Competitions
A follow-up and reminder from last month’s Fore Info. We’re changing one of the basic entry criteria for competitions. Instead of having a handicap with competition status you will have to have submitted scores in at least 6 qualifying competitions in the 12 months prior to the closing date of entry for the competition. Remember, that for men, there are no qualifying competitions between mid-November and the beginning of March, so to be eligible for competitions in March 2020 you need to ensure you submit enough qualifying scores this year.
Some other reminders: –
· To enter the 2019/2020 Winter Leagues, by 20th October 2019 you will need to have played in at least 6 qualifying competitions since November 2018.
· To enter the summer knock-outs in 2020, by 1st March 2020 you will need to have played in at least 6 qualifying competitions since 1st March 2019.
· If you have not submitted enough qualifying scores, then you may still play in singles, stroke-play competitions for handicapping purposes only. You will not be eligible for prizes.
The procedure for submitting a Supplementary Score is posted in the Changing Rooms. A couple of important reminders …
· You must register for a Supplementary Score using the PSI terminal before you start your round.
· Your score card should be dated, signed by your marker, and the set of tees used must be indicated.
· Your score card should be placed in the green box underneath the PSI terminal
A Look at the Rules
In a foursomes medal competition, player A plays off the tee and his ball ends up in a bush.
His partner decides the ball is unplayable and drops a ball within two club lengths of the balls original position.
Player A then plays the ball to the green and his partner then puts out.
At this point, the players are told that
… they played in the wrong order.
What is the ruling?
Two events have been the highlight for Vets golf in July: the Vets Past Captains Day and the Vets Championship.
12 Past Captains were reunited for an excellent morning’s golf on 11 July. Played in near perfect weather and course conditions and followed by an entertaining post match lunch; the whole was successfully organised by our Vice Captain Ed Tinley. The trophy was won on count back by Bill Pescod, Vets Captain in 2009; runner-up was Geoff Procter.
The Vets Championships were played over 2 successive Mondays and the scratch winner was Brian Overton, (gross 159) runner-up Drew Fielden (gross 160) and the net winner was John Claughton (net 131), runner-up Brian Overton (net 133).
Brian’s success continued with victory with wife Mandy in the Husbands and Wives foursomes competition, scoring an amazing 44 points!
The Vets summer friendly matches are at the heart of Vets golf and at the end of the season the Captain’s Tankard is presented to the best overall golfer playing in these matches. A minimum of 5 home and 5 away games is needed to qualify and points are awarded for wins and draws in individual pairings (more for away than home games). 27 matches have been played to date with 16 team wins and 6 halves. Bob Archer followed by Tony Freeman currently top the leader board but with 12 matches still to come.
And finally …. congratulations to Tony Hutt on winning the “Dropouts” (plate) competition in the Pro’s Clubhouse Knock Out.

Member Benefit – Personal Liability Insurance
England Golf are now providing all affiliated members with personal liability insurance as a member benefit.
As golfers we are all aware of the potential for injury particularly through ball strikes. Members are covered when playing or practicing golf at any golf club or recognised practice facility in the UK, Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man, in the event that they are held liable for injuring someone or causing serious property damage at a golf facility. Full details can be found here;
If you are a member of an affiliated golf club, and are paying an affiliation fee to England Golf, then your personal liability insurance cover came into effect automatically on 1 July 2019. Should you wish to make a claim, you will need to have registered with England Golf at www.englandgolf.org/my-account so Bluefin Sport can validate your eligibility. They will do this by confirming both your membership with your golf club and your online registration with England Golf.
Some of you may have joined the England Golf Members Benefits Scheme some years ago – you will however need to re-register. They have however identified some technical issues already and if a husband and wife share an email address you will be required to contact England Golf directly to register.
We have had two written complaints from walkers recently.
WATCH OUT FOR WALKERS WHEN…
1. Teeing Off: on any of the holes which have footpaths crossing them. Please pay particular attention when playing the 2nd and 17th. Send one of your playing group up the viewing steps to ensure the fairway ahead is clear. A ‘near miss’ is both dangerous and frightening.
2. Taking Relief: Gentlemen – when turning away from your playing group to ‘take a pee’ in the bushes please make sure you are not surprising a walker coming from the opposite direction ! Better still use the loo on the 6th/14th.
TOP TIPS No.2 – ‘Playing a provisional ball’
A “provisional ball”, often shortened just to “provisional”, is a second golf ball played by a golfer who believes his first ball (the stroke he just played) may be lost (but not in a penalty area or out of bounds.
Say you hit your drive and, whoops, it’s way left, deep into woods. You think, “I’ll never find that ball, it’s probably lost”. The penalty for a lost ball (or a ball hit out of bounds) is stroke-and-distance. The “and distance” part means that if you are strictly adhering to the rules, after walking forward and searching for your ball, and confirming that it is lost or OB, you’d have to trudge all the way back to the spot of that previous stroke and play another shot.
Or, better still before you go forward to search, you can play a provisional ball. The purpose of the provisional ball, really, is saving time: Now, after hitting the provisional, if you go forward and search and can’t find that first shot, well, you’ve already put another ball into play. You don’t have to trudge back and re-play the shot, because you’ve already hit that provisional and saved a whole lot of time! Whilst you are searching for the ball (3 minutes) you can also call any group behind to ‘play thru’ – and you will be applauded for being a considerate golfer!
If you manage to ‘duff’ your replayed drive, you can still play your ball again (and again) until such time as the provisional ball is played from a spot nearer to the hole than the original ball is estimated to be. Hopefully whilst all this is going on your playing partners have found your original ball !

You will have no doubt noticed that the fixtures diary no longer contains members contact details. This was due to the changes in the GDPR laws.
As part of our effort of providing an enhanced range of member information and communication, we are pleased to inform you that the new member’s app is now live and available.
To download the app please visit the App Store (Apple) or Play Store (Android) and search for ClubV1 Members Hub. The app is completely free. If you wish to download the Club app to your laptop or home computer use the web link below, creating a HDIDO registration as above and saving onto your desktop.
You will need to register before you can use the app.
The app will direct you through the HowDidIDo Passport registration process. If you are already a HDIDO user, you will not need to re-register, simply use the same login details.
In order to verify that you are a registered member of Alresford GC you will be prompted to verify your membership. You may need some or all of the following information:

Another long dry spell has been great for golf !
As you would expect, this does bring some new challenges and some opportunities.
Given the dry conditions we had a couple of spare days so have been around most of the golf course removing low hanging branches. This helps with getting the mowers underneath them and speeding up play. We have been irrigating most nights of late and currently have 1100 cm3 of water left on the bore hole allowance. Irrigation is now turned off for a couple of days thanks to the incoming rain.
Our staff are performing well, and we are very happy with our work schedules and plans for the coming months. Recruitment has not been successful as our last candidate found another job just before we could interview him. Thanks again to Lee who is helping us out a couple of days every week.
Greens have been top dressed and tined, nutrient applications are Iron and plant growth regulator, Nitrogen and potassium liquid feed and wetting agent and sugars. Simon’s recent root tests showed notable improvement in root depth which is great!! A fungicide had to be applied the week before the Club Championships due to high humidity which kicked off some disease. The Club Championships preparation went really well and we were especially pleased with the course condition and feedback from members.
Contractors are booked in for 21st October for ‘Drill and Fill” on 6 greens.
Our new Rough cutting machine arrived earlier this month and we are all very pleased with it.
The new rule allowing players to have the flag in while putting has had some unexpected consequences!
We have noticed a considerable increase to damage to the holes. There are 3 main actions that cause problems. Yanking the flag out in an attempt to pull the ball out with it. Using ‘grab’ attachments to remove the ball (there is less room with the flag in, so an increased likelihood of the putter catching the surround) and finally fingers and rings catching the edges. If in doubt, please remove the flag to retrieve your ball.
Maintenance week is underway. The plan is to solid tine and then introduce a phosphite fertiliser into the holes which will aid root growth and then Graden scarify over the top which will remove thatch and back fill with sand and seed at the same time leaving us with a level surface.
Bunkers have all been edged and fly-mowed and the rain of late has enabled us to relieve some of the more compacted bunkers.

Paths are tidy. Rough is growing up long in places; Ragwort is present and we will try to remove it as and when.
The wildflower area has gone down very well and we will be introducing more of this to the course as we go forward. New planters are in by the 1st tee, awaiting to be planted up. New plate and brass disc have been put in on the 13th tee to match the card.
A new practice bunker is being installed on the chipping range:
This will be in play in a couple of weeks.
The bunker is totally sealed from any contamination with artificial liner in the base and artificial turf on the bunker walls. Thanks to Ecobunker for training us along the way. The smaller bunker has been filled in to allow for a practice swale to go in against the top chipping green.
Work on Curlys Barn is also progressing.
You may have noticed that the rubble created by the work on Curlys Barn has been placed at the rear of the 13th tee in readiness for the tee rebuild this winter. Project work should start in the last week of October on the 13th tee extension. Ongoing from that will be the 13th green new bunkers. I hope to confirm the full winter projects next month.

A Look at the Rules
Player A‘s partner must return and re-drop the ball as they did originally, but must then play the ball themselves.
… Penalty for playing in the wrong order is two strokes.
Themade in the wrong order and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected (including made and any penalty strokes solely from playing that ball) do not count. Rule 22.3

By the time you read this the 100 Club Salver and Evening Meal will have been played. A full report will appear in next month’s Fore Info.
What is the 100 Club?
The Alresford Golf Club 100 Share Club was started in 1987 to raise extra funds to support and enhance the club Centenary celebrations which took place in 1990. Almost £5,000 was added to the Centenary Fund – a fantastic contribution.
It proved so popular that members who had joined chose to continue the scheme indefinitely. The ongoing objective of the 100 Club was then agreed as being “to provide funds for capital expenditure to enhance the Golf Course and/or Club House”.
This is still very much the objective and projects supported by the 100 Club would generally be considered ‘extras’ and not necessarily within the Golf Club budget.
Many items have been purchased over the years with the new rattan patio furniture being the most recent. In recent years the 100 Club has purchased the drinking fountain on the 4th/15th holes, the finger post signage, the Information Board and Clock at the first tee and the automated Defibrillator in the Entrance Hall.
So, can I join the 100 Club?
Yes of course. New members are always welcome and so as a Golf Club member you can actively contribute towards future enhancements to the facilities on the Golf Course or Clubhouse whilst having the opportunity to win a monthly cash prize. Or why not increase your existing shareholding for an even better chance of a prize. Shares can be purchased for £1 per month paid for by Standing Order and there is no limit on the number which can be held – most members have between 1 and 5 shares. Each share is allocated a number which is entered into the monthly draw with a top prize of £100, with a second prize of £50 and four other prizes of £32. |*** Men's and Ladies' Club Championships ***|
|Over the weekend of 29th and 30th of June, Alresford Golf Club held its Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championships and associated handicap competitions.
On two very hot days, particularly on the Saturday, with little wind, the course was presented in perfect condition with hard running fairways, fast greens and difficult rough.
The Men’s Champion was Will Pakenham-Walsh with 2 consistent rounds of 73 and 72 for a total of 145, a clear 6 shots ahead of Trevor Pearce on 151, with Josh Evans in third place with 152.
The Ladies’ Champion for the 6th year running was Kelly Travers with a gross score of 159 for 36 holes finishing 6 shots ahead of Lynne Cowser on 165.
Will Pakenham-Walsh also picked up the John Holmes Trophy in the handicap competition for men with a nett score of 135, and in the ladies’ handicap competitions the Brenda Hedges Trophy (Silver Division) was won by Lynne Cowser with a nett 149 and the Dorothy Coombs (Bronze Division) was won by Elizabeth Hesse with a nett 146. The Vets Championships were played on consecutive Mondays, 15th and 22nd July. The good weather and the course conditions made for excellent scoring with the top 6 players having nett scores of par (138) or below. New names on the trophy this year with Brian Overton taking the Gross Championship with a score of 159 just ahead on Drew Fielden and George Skayman on 160; in the Nett Championship, John Claughton takes the title with a score of 131 with Brian Overton and Drew Fielden closely behind on 133 and 134 respectively.

TEAM GOLF 2019
FINALS EVENING & RESULTS
Another successful season of TG was completed on a glorious Summer evening on Thursday 11th July. Fifty members from 10 teams completed Round 2 of the Championship. All team members played an individual stableford competition with the best three scores to count from each team.
This followed the nine weeks of the League competition, when team pairs played a 9 hole better ball against all the other teams resulting in close finish for the eventual league winners.
Fortunately good weather prevailed most Thursday evenings and play was enjoyed by all with some really tight finishing with just a one shot difference. Not all teams were able to field a junior sadly as several dropped out from last year leaving only a few available. How ever some very youthful looking adults made up the numbers!
We are grateful to the team Captains for getting their teams together and organising all their availability particularly for the league evenings. There was some mix up on dates so apologies, however please note we intend to start a week later next year on the 14th of May. Our thanks to all those who helped booking players in and recording of scores, etc.

A full list of all our mixed match fixtures is on the board in the foyer. Volunteer lists for subsequent matches will be posted periodically. Any member with a CONGU handicap is welcome to play. It is very much hoped that more members will avail themselves of the opportunity to play mixed golf both at home and on some good away courses. All the matches are played in a very friendly manner and everyone is welcome, no matter what their handicap. An e-mail will be sent to all those chosen to play and the team list will be posted on the board.
A decision has been made that Five Day members may play in the weekend matches if we are unable to field a team from amongst the Seven Day members. There will be a column on the volunteer sheet for Five Day members to sign up. No green fees will be payable. It is hoped that Five Day Members will take advantage of this opportunity to play at the weekend, both at home and away, if required.
Again this year we will be continuing with a smart/casual dress code for our match meals at home and it seems likely that other clubs are also going down this path. There will be no need for gentlemen to wear jacket and tie, unless they so wish. We are also looking at the possibility of serving brunch prior to some of our home matches, instead of having a meal afterwards. Any feedback on this (no pun intended!) would be welcome.
