Management Corner

Looking back, it’s just over six years since we embarked on consulting members about changes to the clubhouse. Check out the February 2019 Fore Info to see where it all started.
In the intervening period we had the COVID19 pandemic which changed the way we ran our club with extended use of social media and the enhanced use of technology for club administration and operation. The clubhouse redevelopment was successfully completed, a new Golf Professional was recruited, our bar and catering was outsourced and we now have a tee booking system. During this period our course has also been improved, with new bunkering, the addition of swales and extended tees along with many other incremental improvements carried out with reference to the Hawtree Report of June 2015. It is fair to say that the club has gone through a major transformative period. Since the February 2019 Fore Info was published over half of our current membership (in all categories) have joined our club, with 34% (339) of members joining since the Clubhouse reopened in June 2022 following refurbishment. For the more seasoned club members there has been enormous change, but for those 339 new members they are probably wondering what all the fuss is about!
We were conscious that members were surveyed on several occasions in the past specifically about tee bookings and the clubhouse development proposals, however it was always the intention to get to a point whereby a ‘club wide’ survey would be commissioned upon which to review and base our next strategic goals.
The Management Committee have agreed that the time is now right to survey the whole membership and have settled upon the Players 1st survey as a simple-to-use software package for golf clubs. The survey is based upon service areas which include; Course, Club life, Clubhouse, Bar & catering, Practice facilities, pro-Shop, lessons and the Club in general. We have the ability to add a number of customised questions to the mandatory questions and we will be assisted in formulating specific questions and interpretation of the results by Kate Dymott our South Region England Golf support officer.
The Players 1st survey provides the club with a Net Promoter Score for every category which can be benchmarked against national averages. This tool will ensure that our club will know exactly what members value and prioritise for their club. It is very probable that the survey will be repeated annually to measure improvement over periods of time.
It is intended to issue the survey to members towards the end of April, we will advise in advance when you are about to receive the survey. It will be your chance to have a say in the strategic direction of the club, please don’t miss out on your opportunity to express your opinion.

Is there life after ClubV1?

We are moving to Intelligent Golf (IG)

Following a lengthy period of investigation, the decision has been made to transition our golf management software system from Club Systems (Club V1) to Intelligent golf (IG). A sub-group has been considering this for some time, has conducted visits to other clubs to witness the operational aspects and spoken at length with IG representatives. We have been unhappy with some of the aspects of the Club V1 system and the restrictions that this places upon both the Office and the C&H Committee and so it was decided at the Captains Committee last year to conduct a thorough review and comparison of the two products following which an informed decision could be made.

We are currently now in the process of moving across to Intelligent Golf (IG) and hope to achieve this by the middle of May.

IG is an integrated system for golf club members and administration, covering membership management, tee booking and competitions. We are also taking the opportunity to bring our website within the same system providing integration between the new members app and the club website.

It is a significant change for both the Office, our C&H committee and members and a decision which has not been taken lightly, but we feel that IG provides a better and more professional approach and one which will enhance the club’s reputation and online image.

We will provide regular updates and full support to members during this transition through workshops, ‘pop in’ events, detailed information on how to log in and help guides to support members moving across.

Some of the many benefits will be-

One single App (rather than ClubV1 and HDID)

Automatic publication of results

Tee booking-fully integrated and more flexibility to edit, and set up competitions for example, morning or afternoon events including scrambles, open events, Charity days, two tee starts and social golf.

Produce team sheets with handicap data and results facilities so all members can see.

Comprehensive data capture of visitor information with automatic follow up emails to visitors after they have played the course

Website with secure Members Area accessed through individual ‘log in’ containing key club documents.

Improved Reporting functions.

Easy marketing and contact key groups with both text messages and emails

Social events can be promoted, booked and managed on-line.

We are aware some members have used IG and the IG App in the past, so if you are willing to offer any support to other members when we start the roll out, please contact Richard.lane13@hotmail.com or generalmanager@alresfordgolf.co.uk

A very early heads up – Date of Birth and Postcode. If the club does not have a record of either of these, you will not be able to log in until this information has been updated.

Interview: our Ladies Captain

Polly, first congratulations for being appointed as Ladies Captain 2025.
Let’s kick off with finding a bit more about yourself. I hear you were always sports mad.
Polly: Yes from an early age I started playing tennis and played in the junior Berkshire County squad, then I progressed to play badminton and that became my number one sport where I processed through the ranks and made the England squad. I did play hockey up to Southern region level but the risk of losing my teeth made me decide to give it up!
Editor: With a all this sport was there time for a career too?
Polly: Yes, education and career was always important, and after grammar school I studied Sports Science and Psychology of Sport in Birmingham, and then progressed to qualify as a teacher, as well as a Professional Tennis coach. I coached abroad in Majorca, Italy and South of France, and had a coaching school in Oxfordshire, as well as teaching in Birmingham and Hampshire.
Editor: When did you first start playing golf and what are some of the golfing highlights?
Polly: I had a knee injury 20 years ago, and that forced to me start playing golf and I joined Hockley Golf Club. I managed to get my handicap down to single figures, and I have had two holes in one, both on hole 16, one at Hockley and the other in Brisbane!
Editor: Probably many members are not so familiar with the Ladies Section. We don’t have a ‘Mens’ Section so why do we have a Ladies one?
Polly: I think the ladies section at Alresford is very vibrant, so I would be surprised if members were not aware of the section!
Editor: So does your role differ from that of the Club Captain?
Polly: There is really not any difference, and I think moving the club forward the roles should be equal!
Editor: What are you responsible for and what are the main activities you cover for the Ladies?
Polly: I chair the Ladies Committee and organise 15 key events throughout the year. eg Spring meeting etc. I am fortunate that I have an excellent committee and team managers who work really hard to make Alresford Ladies an amazing section. All the roles are on a 3 year rotation, which helps with continuity and brings in new ideas, the captain is responsible for making the selections.

Editor: What is your biggest challenge you face in your role?

Polly: There are many challenges. One is to make sure the ladies are represented in management decisions, as we have one of the largest sections in the county. I am playing a round of golf with all new members, which hopefully helps them integrate into the club, and the ladies have organised ”Meet and Greet” and ”Nine and Wine”, social events. Also I play golf as a sport, so the performance of the teams is really important to me, and I am hoping this year we will have some great individual and team results.

Editor: I know you are keen to promote your Charity. Tell us more about it and why you chose it?

Polly: Fifteen years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the care and treatments I received at Southampton Hospital, was life changing ! Luckily I am free of cancer now, but I hadalways planned to do some charity fund raising, and my role as Captain is the ideal opportunity. I have agreed with the hospital that they will match fund any money raised, so that is really great news. I would like to thank all the members of AGC who have supported me in raising the money, because the numbers of women being diagnosed with breast cancer is now 1 in 2!

Link: to hospital brochure https://www.alresfordgolf.co.uk/alresford-golf-club-flyer-updated-7-03-2025/

Editor: I know Bar and Catering is not your area of responsibility but what if any changes would the Ladies Section like to see for the future?

Polly: The catering is really difficult in any golf club, but possible suggestions would be a larger range of sandwiches and cake available every day! Also lighter lunches on a Tuesday and more variation, encouraging ladies to eat more at the club.

Editor: What concerns you most about the club? Any suggestions to improve value for members?

Polly: I think our members should be proud of beingpart of a well run golf club. The course is playing really well, with lovely fast and true greens, and when all the winter work has finished the course will be excellent. My only slight concern is that some of the ladies tees should be level.

Editor: What are your aspirations for the role? What would you like to achieve?

Polly: I would like to think that ”for whatever reason you joined AGC, there will be something for you! Whether it is a compelling competitive calendar, meeting friend socially, or attending/playing  fun events at the club. I feel we have already shown we are a top competitive ladies section, but I personally would like to achieve more!

Thanks Polly. I wish you a successful year and especially a big charity campaign success for Southampton Hospital.

Catering Update

As we spring into the golfing season, I thought it the perfect time to give an update to the membership on Bar & Catering.

There is no hiding from the fact that over recent months, the catering side of our offering has not been at the standard any of us (members or Kitchen @ team) would have wanted or expected.

We have worked tirelessly in the background to secure additional chefs and a Head Chef to lead us thorough 2025 and beyond and where I thought recently we had secured these positions, unfortunately these fell through. Rob in the kitchen has continued to work hard covering all the events plus the day to day business but we have had to rely heavily on agency chefs which is never ideal – from either a consistency or cost perspective. It is very difficult to plan changes to the business without key staff in place.

Probably the largest downside of having a kitchen (and business) under this pressure is a restricted, unevolving, ‘I’ve eaten everything off this’ menu scenario, which we have found ourselves in. I must say at this point a big ‘thank you’ to those members who have supported and understood the reasonings for this menu and offered their comments and ideas when it comes to ‘tweaking’ and ideas.

Before I talk about what’s next – I would also like to publicly thank Tracey, Vicky, Harriet and Sarah who have not only kept the beer flowing and coffee pouring but also fielded their fair share of comments regarding the loyalty scheme! All four are a huge asset to both The Kitchen @ and Alresford Golf Club.

So what next – firstly, we’ve hired a Head Chef. Her name is Ria and she comes to us following a 5 year Head Chef role based in Purbrook for CH&CO and prior to that in Waterlooville for Connect Catering. She has a big passion for baking,  so it won’t be long before cakes and bakes will be on the bar again! Ria will join us on the 22nd April (Ladies Spring Meeting) and I hope you all get a chance to introduce yourselves and welcome her to Alresford over the coming months.

In the short term we are refreshing the current food offer. This will be available from Friday this week. With the longer hours on the course and more members visiting, now is a good time to change. The menu will be revisited again come Summer and after Ria has had a few weeks to settle in, so please bear with us and look out for the new options.

As of 1st April, Spring hours come into play and these can be found on the clubs website.

To finish, a final thank you  to all those members who have offered their support during the last few months which have proved challenging for us. It is greatly appreciated.

We will continue to work hard to provide a bar and catering offer that meets all our expectations.

From the Club Captain

It’s good to be getting into the Golfing season and seeing our course getting back to it’s best after all the hard work put into it over the winter projects.

The Men’s friendlies were played against the County Juniors (won 3&2) and the Tri-Way against Alton GC and Tylney Park GC at Tylney Park. We won by significant points 249 versus Alton at 234 and Tylney at 210. A shout-out to Brian Shand who scored significantly over 40points on his own and brought on a barrage of different versions of bandit from all 3 teams. That’s what happens when you have one of them rounds (apparently).

Unfortunately, we lost away to Royal Winchester GC also having a lot of course maintenance and still playing off mats which was new to most of our team.

Please review ClubV1 Teams/Men’s Friendlies 2025 and mark your availability for as many matches as possible, and give Charlie plenty of choices to mix up each team.

The Club Team Challenge between Men’s Gales Hockley, Men’s County 7’s and Ladies Stoneham Team. Thank you to the Ladies for the preparation work and organising Start Sheets and Score Cards and To Sean Yates (covering Ash Willmott) and Trevor Pearce for preparing their teams for a great day that saw Polly Church get handed the Trophy for a great win for the ladies.

Some of the Ladies were off for warm weather training in Turkey – Like they needed it. Dorothy ShoreTim O’Connor and I are still hurting!

New Member Meetings currently reside at 32 with 28 Men and 4 Ladies.

Of the 26 Men joining and 4 Ladies Joining (2 not joining), split is 10x 7-day, 9x 5-day, 8x Intermediate, 1x Student, 2 x Country.

I am hoping to see more activity this year on the Marshalling. Please contact the office if you need help for signing-up and would be good to see new faces supporting doing some sessions out on the course if you have time, advice and guidance can be given.

I have had to speak with a couple of people this month with regards to wearing hats, having Telephone Calls and having Clubs and Shoes inside the Club House bar area.

Please be considerate to the other members and staff and respect the clubhouse rules.

I didn’t get to the Bingo this time but trust it went well as always.

Please support the Mother Day Dinner if you can and the up-coming Spring Scramble also.

Ladies Section

March has been a fantastic month for the ladies, with several outstanding wins across multiple competitions.

The Hayling Trophy team has secured a place in the semi-finals after a dominant 5 – 0 victory over Worldham in their final group match. The squad of 13 ladies led by team manager Linda Wager has played exceptionally well throughout the competition, showing great team work and determination. We wish them the very best of luck as they prepare for the semi-finals.

In the Daily Mail Foursomes, Alresford’s representatives Heather Williams & Sarah Staines, have continued their strong run. After defeating Royal Winchester 2 & 1, they followed it up with another impressive win against Hockley 3 & 2. Their success highlights their great partnership and ability to perform under pressure.

A special congratulations to Jenny Myers & Rosie Rooney who represented the county first team in a match against Oxfordshire. Both players delivered excellent performances and won their matches, a great accomplishment at the county level.

A particularly exciting milestone was achieved in the Club Team Challenge, where for the first time in the history of the competition, the ladies’ Stoneham Cup team secured a remarkable victory! This emphatic win is a testament to the talent and dedication of our ladies’ squad, and bodes well for the future matches in the Stoneham Cup.

Congratulations to the winter triple team that played at Corhampton and won, with a great score of 128 points, and therefore we came a credible second overall, after trailing in last place.

Winter Triple Team: Sarah Densham, Sandra Hooker, Sue Poulter, Sarah Thorne, Liz Hastings, Helen Marchant, Tricia Palmer and Marion Bruce

Looking ahead the ladies’ friendly matches will begin next month, providing more opportunities for enjoyable golf, on different course. Also I am excited to announce a ladies fashion show taking place on Tuesday 29th April, from 7 – 9pm. It promises to be a fun and social evening, raising money for the ladies’ charity, and we hope to see many of you there to support the event.

Well done to all the ladies for an outstanding month, and best of luck in the upcoming matches!

Vets Section

Vets Rollup
The Winter has seen some good roll up competitions taking place when the weather allowed and a good chance for members old and new to play in a fun format.
We hold a Winter Trophy competition with aggregate results from November to the end of March and this Winters Trophy winner is Steve Oldham.
Hopefully with the weather improving we will see good number each week this summer.
Here’s looking forward to great company and good golf on our magnificent course.

A Look at the Rules

Question

You find your ball embedded in the rivetted wall of the greenside bunker on the 4th? What can you do next?

Greens

As I write this, I’ve just come off the course, and I must say—we desperately need rain!

Winter Works

Most of our planned winter works are now complete, although some areas will remain marked as GUR (Ground Under Repair) for a little while longer.

Bunkers

The renovation of our bunkers is nearly finished. A whopping 60 tonnes of sand has been used to replenish existing bunkers and create new ones. The approach areas to the new bunkers on the 1st, 8th, and 17th holes have rooted nicely. However, the fescue turf around the greenside banks hasn’t rooted yet. Please try to avoid walking on these areas as they are still GUR. The sand trap, though, is now in play. Similarly, the practice bunker and the small 5th fairway bunker have new turf on their greenside banks. These areas are also GUR, so please remember to lift and drop your ball.

As I mentioned earlier, we’re really in need of rain. Due to supplier delays, we laid the fescue turf later than planned, which means it’s required hand-watering and continues to dry out. The greens team is doing everything they can to keep it alive until the rain finally arrives!

The Second Tee

The second tee is back in play, just in time for our first 36-hole board competition of the year—a qualifying course. The yardage posts and tee discs are back in place, and the tee tops have been trimmed to 12mm. We appreciate your patience, as the area to the left of the tee is still recovering. With this dry weather, the banks to the tees are also needing hand-watering.

On a side note, the more observant among you may have spotted that we’ve replaced the blue 150-yard marker posts!

Woodland Management

Our woodland management efforts have been in full swing over the winter. Recently, we planted 9 new trees and 100 hazel whips, all of which need hand-watering too. Stump grinding has been completed in some areas, which are still marked as GUR. While some of these spots have been turfed, others are waiting for rain before we can seed them.

Other Course Updates

The team has crafted a new shallowed-out path from the patio to the 9th green, complete with mounding. This path must NOT be used by buggies.

We’ve recently fired up the irrigation system—just in time for the new turf!

Greens

Our greens have had several liquid applications to aid recovery, along with a residual wetting agent to help retain moisture. Unfortunately, with the ongoing dry conditions (and the forecast predicting more of the same), we’re losing 2–3mm of moisture daily. We’re closely monitoring moisture levels, and the greens will also undergo light aeration in the first week of April.

Tees & Aprons

Tees and aprons are slowly bouncing back after a tough winter. The tee tops have received granular fertiliser, and any bare patches have been overseeded and dressed. Fairways have been raked, scarified, and treated with both granular fertiliser and liquid iron. Altogether, 160 bags of fertiliser have been used across the fairways, grass paths, greens surrounds, and tee banks.

Divot Party – April 10

Lastly, don’t forget to join our annual spring Divot Party on the morning of April 10. We will meet at 7.30am on the patio.

General Manager’s Update

Welcome to those new members who have joined the club in March and April so far;

Ken MacIssac, Matt Guiver , Mrs Nicki Evans (7 day), Jeremy Tate, John Kenward ( 5 day), Sam Campbell, Harrison Wood ( Intermediate), Oliver Corlette, Andy Hollands (Country), Mrs Juliet Rowe ( Academy), Dillon Refausse and Fergus Mercer-Nairne (Juniors)

We hope that you will enjoy your time with us.

COURSE ETIQUETTE & RESPECT FOR FELLOW MEMBERS

The current dry and warmish weather conditions will no doubt encourage everybody to venture out during April.  It is important that we all play a part in protecting the course and helping it recover quickly in time for the start of the golfing season. Members can assist in this in a number of ways;

  • Repairing pitch marks on the greens (if not yours, then find another to repair)
  • Replacing divots on fairways
  • Repairing divots on the tees with divot mix
  • Adhering to any course directional signage directing traffic away from the worn areas
  • Keeping to paths when possible
  • Not walking over newly prepared areas with or without turf
  • Not taking trolleys between bunker edges and the greens.

‘Pace of Play’ – probably one of the most contentious issues at any golf club. Every golfer does not consider themselves deliberately slow. However ‘Pace of Play’ is not always about the time. I would ask all members to consider how they are effecting other members on the course. It is the groups responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole or it is delaying the group behind i.e. it is apparent that they are playing quicker due either to ability or numbers, YOU MUST invite the group behind to play through irrespective of the number of players in the group. If your group is invited to ‘play thru’ you should do so, as by not doing so you in turn may be delaying the group behind you!

Allowing a group to play thru is not a slur on your golfing ability or character, but you will thanked and well regarded for identifying the need to and calling players through quickly and without delay.

Please respect the Course Marshall at all times – ignoring or arguing with the Course Marshall is not acceptable and any member doing so will be subject to the club disciplinary process.

FOR CLARIFICATION – the guide timings on the scorecard are not the times you are permitted to take. They are there for guidance only. So if the group behind is being held up, they MUST be invited through irrespective of whether you are playing to the time according to the card.

COMPETITIONS 2025 – BE PREPARED

For those members who play COMPETITIVE GOLF, please be aware of the Terms and Conditions of entry to club competitions found on the website in the Members Area / Competition Committee page.

For example to be eligible for prizes for Men’s Trophy and Board Competitions you must have a handicap index, have playing rights for the day of the competition and should have played in at least 6 qualifying competitions, (Home or Away but not General play) in the 12 months prior to the closing date for entry to the competition.

For the Club Championships (Men’s & Ladies’), you must be a full 7 day, Intermediate or junior member, with a fully developed handicap index (20 scores) and have played in at least 6 qualifying competitions in the 12 months prior to the closing date for entry to the competition (with a minimum of 3 at Alresford).

All members are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the General Terms of Competition at the start of the season to avoid any last minute panic as closing dates for competitions begin to loom! Watch out for entry details and deadlines as they are posted on Club V1, FORE INFO and the Members Updates during the season.

CLUB ‘ROLL UP’

Fancy a game during the week? All members are welcome to come along to the informal ‘club roll-up’ on Wednesday mornings. There is a tee reservation between 11.00-11.54am – members wishing to take part should meet at the starters hut from approx. 10.45am for allocation of groups. As per the times highlighted for the Ladies and Vets Sections, we politely ask members to show courtesy to those who wish to play in this ‘roll up’ at this time. If you do not wish to play with this group please choose another time if possible.

COURTESIES FOR 2025

Courtesy rounds are available for dates when we are hosting a major competition or county event. Our ‘partner’ clubs offer tee times for our members and we do likewise when they are hosting similar events.

The dates and clubs are posted on the Main Noticeboard. All requests for courtesy rounds must be made in writing to the Office at Alresford. If more than a single request is received for any tee time, then a ballot will be held. The successful member will be notified 3 weeks prior.

THE MASTERS is coming, 10 -13th April.

Make sure to enter the MASTERS CHARITY FANTASY TEAM SWEEP. Competition details will be released to members via email on Monday 31st March.

The entry fee is £3 and via Club V1 app. Entries close at 09:00am on Thursday 10th April – entry AND payment must have been made by then or your entry will not count.

The winner will receive 40% of the pot, the runner up 20%, and third place will receive 10% and fourth place 5% with 25% going to the Captains Charity. Entry is via the Club V1 app. We had 95 entrants last year raising £70.50 (25% of pot) for the Captain’s Charity and £112 for the winner Brian Overton, who won last year with a fantastic 103 points.

Social

A fairly quiet month for social but on Saturday 22nd March we held a successful Bingo night enjoyed by 45 attendees. There were 20 different guests who called “Bingo”, so the winnings were enjoyed by a good selection of players. Dates for your diary include the start of team golf on Thursday 17th April run by the Whites, and the Texas scramble on Easter Monday being organised and advertised by the Ladies section. Please note that Thursday evenings are a fun opportunity for socialising – ideally on the patio in the sunshine! – even if you’re not playing in a Team Golf. Hope to see you there!

TEAM GOLF

The 25th Anniversary Tournament is almost upon us and we are delighted that the Twelve teams this year include new members and some long standing supporters!

On 17th April we begin with all 72 players competing in the first round of The Championship, in a two-tee start at 4.30pm – the best 4 scores from the team of 6 to count, so a good chance for all to mix and meet new members.

The League then starts on 24th April with each team’s pairs playing against another team’s pairs for League points, plus a sleeve of balls for the best pair of the week.

Juniors are also competing in the fourth TG Junior Order of Merit so will also have an opportunity to contribute to their team’s success.

As well as some social functions planned, also new for this year is a KO competition, planned for the 8th May – details to follow.
For full details of the teams, fixtures and weekly timings, please go to the Team Golf Button on the club website

Our winners for April 2025

£100  Ian Cantrill

£50     Norman Sheen

£35 Prize winners

David Marshall, Kathryn Fielden, Rob Black, Brian Young, Chris Spicer

Congratulations to our prize winners this month. If you look at the winners list on the board in the foyer you will see that the lowest share number drawn was 4 (Norman’s) and the highest was 710 (Chris’s) with all others somewhere in between. We have 738 shares in play at the moment so this month represented an excellent spread of our range.

The latest Honours Boards have been installed in the dining room so do take a look when next in the clubhouse.  The 100 Club has provided £5,000 of funding towards these so our members can enjoy a lasting contribution to the history of the golf club.

If you have a project or idea which you think might be assisted by funds from the 100 Club then please give me a call or email – details below.

How can I join the 100 Club and contribute to future projects?

New members are always welcome and so as a Golf Club member you can actively contribute towards future enhancements to the facilities on the Golf Course or Clubhouse whilst having the opportunity to win a monthly prize. Or why not increase your existing shareholding and know your extra contribution will be available to help with our golf club facilities.  Shares can be purchased for £1 per month paid for by Standing Order and there is no limit on the number which can be held – most members have between 1 and 5 shares.  Each share is allocated a number which is entered into the monthly draw with a top prize of £100, with a second prize of £50 and five other prizes of £35.

For further information about the 100 Club or for an application form please give me a call or send me an email – Pat Wallis phone 01420 564417 or email  peterpat51@outlook.com  Or you can pick up a form from the Office.
